Self sharpening sheath uses carbide to keep blades sharp. Make sure you wash the knife before using as carbide is extremely aggressive and removes a lot of blade material.

I have this in a different blade style. It's my travel knife for cooking. As long as you don't press down on the carbide it's pretty gentle.
Your recommendation to wash is spot on, (both for metal dust and sanitary reasons) though I would add use a bit of paper towel to wipe as well. Sometimes the bits are magnetic and may not simply rinse off. washing correctly with soap, water and agitation will work
