The GIGABYTE Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB stands out as a strong price to performance card, especially for older systems and PCIe 4.0 or earlier builds. It is described as roughly on par with a 6800 non XT, with newer features, and real world results include smooth 1440p play and 90 plus FPS in Horizon Forbidden West. The main caveat is open box availability, which appears limited by store and distance, and there is some concern about receiving the wrong memory size. For shoppers who can find the right unit locally, the discount is notable because these 16GB cards rarely drop near this price.

Common Questions (5)

  • Availability is limited and varies by location. Some listings were only available far away for pickup, while other open-box units could be shipped or found at specific stores, so local YMMV is a real factor.

  • Yes, because the 16GB version is rarely discounted and has reportedly never hit MSRP, so even an open-box discount is meaningful. It is also described as strong price/performance if ray tracing is not a priority.

  • For older PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 3.0 systems, the 9060 XT is the safer choice because the 5060 series can lose performance on older PCIe lanes in some games. The 9060 XT is also described as working better with older CPUs.

  • The card has unique product-identifying stickers that can be matched against the box, which should help catch a mismatch. The practical risk is low if the store checks returns properly, but buying new avoids the concern entirely.

  • The 9060 XT 16GB is described as roughly similar in performance to the 6800 non-XT, but with newer features. That makes it a reasonable modern alternative if you want comparable speed in a newer card.

How much of an upgrade is this over a 6700 (non-xt)? Paired with a Ryzen 5600X3D?

Prices are going to spike on these in the coming days. Buy it now, especially the 16bg or greater versions, while you can.

If you live near a microcenter, you can get the Chalenger 9070 open box for just undr 500 if you use your microcenter card. I have done afew builds with those.

Depends on your existing hardware. They are very similar in overall performance, but have slightly different advantages. For me, my CPU is older, and the 9060 xt is supposed work better with it. My advice: feed all of your PC specs to an AI (or two or three, for comparison) and list a few games you want to play, and ask it which will work better with your system. It'll identify specific strengths and weak points of your existing build, might help you make the decision. At least, AI is better advice than randomly asking SD which GPU is better with no context - if anyone responds, the response will be biased by their brand and gaming preferences, and their own system configs.
The 5060 series when plugged into PCIE 4.0 or older, performance can drop by 50% in some games. These cards are only good if you have the current PCIE 5.0. For older systems, the 9060 xt is the way to go.

"AI is better advice than randomly asking SD"

where do you think AI gets it's info from? the only place to relatively compare GPUs is TECHPOWERUP chart

That's what AI told me as well - I'm getting good with hardware but details like this are still beyond me. I have a PCIE 3.0 board. But, 90+ FPS with maxed settings for Horizon Forbidden West, 60 FPS 1440P on high settings in Expedition 33. Pretty happy with performance, considering it's an entry level GPU and a 6-7 year old CPU (9700k).

Pretty happy with my 9060 xt, though I got the ASRock Steel Legend (also open-box) via Microcenter, around $20 less than this.

Techpowerup can't tell you how two GPUs will operate differently based on your specific hardware. Look at the comments directly above this. This is the granularity where many SD people might not be able to help, and a generalized chart is useless.

To each their own, but I found it very helpful personally. It helped me turn an old used computer from an office equipment fire sale into a proper gaming machine - several other things that were new to me, including small but important details (like AMD vs Nvidia GPU performance on older systems). I basically rebuilt it from scratch - the only original parts are the mobo and CPU. Pretty proud of what I got done, and pretty impressed with the accuracy of the guidance it provided at the same time.

and AI will?

all you have to do is extrapolate... ifyou are running on an i5 2nd gen then yes, there's barely any difference

but you don't need a 9800X3D to see proper performance discrepancy

I was just giving advice to a person to so they could help themself get the answer they needed. Found it very helpful in seeking answers like this, when community forums fail or were too slow for my needs. AMD is better on older hardware than Nvidia, and they might have other considerations that are important. Kinda telling them to seek their own answers. Especially when it's easily available, and they don't need to ask the SD community (which might give them an answer that isn't relevant based on personal preference or inexperience...). Just trying to be helpful to another here. Especially when the question seemed vague enough to indicate a very entry level knowledge of GPUs, and seemed they were in need of a primer none of us are prepared to give them.

AKA "Teach a man to fish." ...that whole thing.
