HP OMEN MAX is a strong 16 inch gaming laptop for high end RTX 5080 performance, with a QHD plus 240 hertz display, replaceable RAM, and upgrade paths up to 64GB or 96GB. The AMD model is described as running cooler for casual use, and one temperature check showed about 82 degrees Celsius on Cinebench and 62 degrees on Time Spy. The main cautions are thermal headroom and RAM compatibility, since some configurations have needed repasting or undervolting and certain memory kits would not work. It is a capable gaming machine, especially if you want extra VRAM and upgrade flexibility.

Common Questions (4)

  • It is a strong RTX 5080 price, but it is about $100 more than an earlier HP Black Friday deal and some shoppers compare it unfavorably to other recent buys like a 2025 G18 at $1800 or open-box units around $1100. Sales tax can push the total close to $1200 depending on location.

  • It can run hotter than some competing ASUS and Dell Alienware models, and some units have reported thermal throttling or BSODs. Other owners report normal temperatures and no fan activity during casual use, with one sample showing about 82°C CPU in Cinebench R23 and 62°C GPU in Time Spy.

  • Yes. The RAM is replaceable, and higher-capacity options like 64GB and 96GB are available. One caveat is that memory compatibility can be finicky, so matching the existing speed/timings may matter.

  • Yes. It is described as one of the better RTX 5080 laptop options, with the extra VRAM over a 5070 helping in modded games and frame generation working well. The main tradeoffs mentioned are HP bloat, weak speakers, and possible overheating on some units.

The likelihood that you pay over ~9.5% sales tax is very not likely, which puts you just a hair under $1200. To have spent $1100 even, your sales tax would have to be above 15%.

I have the Intel version.
It's a decent machine, but a few things to keep in mind, comparing to similar products:
- touchpad is cheap and terrible
- speakers are really bad
- overheating issues (repaste or RMA)
- HP bloat (do a fresh install)
- 5080 and 5090 versions primary SSD slot requires heatsink removal and repaste.

All that said, it's good for gaming - the extra VRAM over 5070 is worth it, especially if you mod games. Frame gen x4 is better than I expected and I run Cyberpunk with most RT options.
How much of overheating issue?

Enough to thermal throttle and/or BSOD. Their fancy liquid metal "cryo" compound is crap. Repasting, and if needed, undervolting, should fix it for a while.
