HP OMEN MAX is a strong 16 inch gaming laptop for high end RTX 5080 performance, with a QHD plus 240 hertz display, replaceable RAM, and upgrade paths up to 64GB or 96GB. The AMD model is described as running cooler for casual use, and one temperature check showed about 82 degrees Celsius on Cinebench and 62 degrees on Time Spy. The main cautions are thermal headroom and RAM compatibility, since some configurations have needed repasting or undervolting and certain memory kits would not work. It is a capable gaming machine, especially if you want extra VRAM and upgrade flexibility.
The laptop's RAM is replaceable, which supports future upgrades beyond the included configuration.
The AMD model reportedly runs cool enough that fans may not spin during casual use.
Benchmarks reportedly show moderate temperatures, with Cinebench R23 reaching about 82°C and Time Spy about 62°C.
The 5080 configuration reportedly offers extra VRAM compared with a 5070, which can help for modded games.
The RAM upgrade path can be finicky, since a Kingston Fury Impact 5600 CL40 kit reportedly would not work while a SK hynix kit did.
The Intel version reportedly has overheating problems that may require repasting or even an RMA.
The Intel version reportedly includes software and hardware friction, including HP bloat that needs a fresh install.
The deal may be less compelling because open-box availability reportedly suggests limited demand in Denver.

It's a decent machine, but a few things to keep in mind, comparing to similar products:
- touchpad is cheap and terrible
- speakers are really bad
- overheating issues (repaste or RMA)
- HP bloat (do a fresh install)
- 5080 and 5090 versions primary SSD slot requires heatsink removal and repaste.
All that said, it's good for gaming - the extra VRAM over 5070 is worth it, especially if you mod games. Frame gen x4 is better than I expected and I run Cyberpunk with most RT options.
