These are awful. We built a new 1 bedroom ADU and did a 2 room, 1 bathroom addition on our house last year and the contractor put these in the new ADU and replaced everything in our house and new addition with these. They go off in the middle of the night for no reason. They claimed there was a fire there was no fire, I reset them multiple times, I replaced them with new versions of same brand. My tenant was also waking up in the middle of the night with these. They are horrible. Maybe you will get lucky, it seemed like it was just 3 faulty units out of the 7 we installed. Its not worth the hassle though. It is awful waking up at 4am to a fire alarm and if they are mounted on the ceiling you have to get a chair or a ladder to reset them.
Dont trust me? Read reviews on amazon or just search google. These things suck, I wouldn't even take them for free.

Last I was in Costco, they have 2 pack first alert combo interconnected for $65? Could be wrong on the price.

Edit: Confirmed price at Niles IL through app

I was recently looking at smoke detectors, as several of the ones in my home have aged out. I read something that concerns me about this model. The 10 year battery is just a lithium battery, and supposedly lithium batteries don't have the slow degradation in charge that the usual alkaline batteries have. They tend to drop off somewhat preciputously.
So this causes a potential concern that one could miss the warning chirps as the battery goes from charged to dead over a shorter amount of time.
Anyway, also note that these are battery only (not hardwired) and not interconnected. I need those features, so I'll be ordering this 9-volt First Alert model:

Are Kidde better than First Alert? Lowes has a seemingly similar unit for $27.

First Alert are far better than these. I would go for any brand over Kidde.

Why are so many people in here interested in detecting carbon dioxide? I don't think that's ever integrated into smoke detectors

Feel like it's a typo, but everyone else seems to be putting that. I'm assuming they all meant CO (monoxide). 🤷

I've never had any of these stupid things last 10yrs. 4yrs or less and it starts chirping. Hate that we can't just change a battery anymore

I can't speak explicitly to kidde sealed 10year alarms but at least on first alert ones you can just open it up and swap the lithium battery out. Most alarms can be opened with a thin flat head or a simple pry tool and it won't affect their functionality (I work on them). The biggest thing to keep in mind is if it's a hardwired unit to make sure you don't puncture the back sticker/seal (tape it up if you do) and make sure the unit is closed back up all the way and that no foam or rubber gasketing is damaged in the process. On hardwired models they are designed to seal away from the junction box for air movement as the air space in the junction box which usually isn't airtight can affect the ability for the smoke to properly make it to the sensor.

In all honesty any alarm that is UL 217 (smoke) and UL 2034 (CO) certified is going to do about the same job but I'd highly recommend UL 217 8th edition or higher as that includes improvements to nuisance fires. There are some low cost Chinese units that can be had for much less than what you find in big box stores that work just as well as any other alarms.

So actually you have a little bit of confusion, basically every smoke alarm certified to the UL 217 standard is tested to ensure that the battery it ships with and any recommendations they provide will give you a fairly decent amount of low battery warning before being completely dead. The information about lithium vs alkaline is to not replace an alkaline with a lithium or vice versa because it was not validated and like you said their voltage discharge curve is quite different. If it's a sealed 10year alarm then it was designed with the specific lithium battery they put inside and will give you plenty of warning about a low battery before the alarm is totally dead.

It's intentionally misleading. If you read the fine print it's 10 year warranty with no guarantee on battery performance.
