Reflux is usually blamed on having too much stomach acid, but in a lot of cases the real problem is the opposite, not enough. Your stomach is supposed to be highly acidic. That acidity is what allows you to digest protein, absorb nutrients like iron and B12, and keep fermentation from happening in the first place.
Salt plays a huge role here. Sodium and chloride are the raw materials your body uses to make hydrochloric acid. Without enough salt, your stomach simply cannot produce the acid it needs to function properly.
When stomach acid is too low, food sits too long and begins to ferment. That fermentation creates gas and pressure, and that pressure pushes stomach contents upward, which is what people experience as reflux or heartburn.
Drinking alkaline water raises stomach pH even more. While it may temporarily reduce the burning sensation, it also weakens digestion and allows even more fermentation to occur. Over time, that can lead to more pressure, more reflux, and more symptoms, not fewer.
Reflux is not always a sign of excess acid*. Often, it is a sign that the stomach does not have enough acid to begin with. In that case, constantly neutralizing it with alkaline water may be doing the opposite of what the body actually needs.
(* Acid reflux can have multiple causes, including lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction, diet, medications, obesity, and other factors.)
