I'm surprised at people mentioning noise with this cooler. I've been using it for 2 years with my 7950X and my computer is 2 feet away from me (with no side panels cause I like the airflow), and I literally cannot hear the fans at all, no matter what I'm doing. It's so quiet I can hear my HDD spinning.

I bought this on sale back in May. Cooling performance is pretty great but the fans were loud at load. I ended up replacing the fans with Noctua fans, but needed to 3d print a spacer per fan because the Noctua fans were slimmer and the clips are fixed length and not adjustable.

I like the setup a lot now, but it ended up but being not a slick deal. If you can deal with the noise at load, this is pretty good. If you can't deal with the noise, then it's not worth the price.

I know this is probably considered an older CPU by today's standards (I'm personally still happy with it's performance Smilie ) but I have this CPU cooler and it's been working well to cool my AMD Ryzen 7, 5700X CPU.

One thing to note if you do buy this.. you will probably have to elevate the fan a bit (trying to remember, maybe an inch?) upwards so it will not be completely flush with the big heatsink the fan attaches to, otherwise the fan sits directly on top of the RAM pretty much touching it or at least for my motherboard setup. I mention it only because it gets annoying if you are forced to reseat the RAM to solve PC problems which I've been forced to do on very rare occasions (at most maybe once a year maybe not even that).. it doesn't seem to have had a negative impact on cooling the CPU however even when gaming (can't remember exact temps but I do remember being surprised at how low they were when playing say Deus Ex Mankind Divided - which admittedly is an older game far as stress or lack thereof it places on the CPU Stick Out Tongue )

Always a good choice for a basic air cooler, just replace the fan if you want a more quiet fan or a higher static pressure fan for more airflow as the stock fan is a bit loud at max RPM.

I like super quiet fans and don't need high heat dissipation with a 7950X3D and 9800X3D so I swap all my fans to Enermax Silent Wings fans (I think discontinued but I stocked up on dozens when they were on clearance around 2023 for $4/ea-$5/ea for 120mm and 140mm versions) since they are more quiet than SilenX fans, cost 1/3 the price, yet still push more CFM. Most of my friends don't care about noise so they use very high static pressure fans for max airflow since they overlclock their Intel CPUs past the point of where diminishing returns makes sense to do so for that extra 1MHz speed at a cost of using 40W more power/heat lol!

I just put the Peerless Assassin 140 on a Ryzen 5700X. At full load CPU-Z stress test I could only get it to 56C on the highest core according to CoreTemp. Single-threaded stress testing it maxed out at 66C on the individual core. Fans didn't appear to spin up faster during any of this.

I would imagine the 120 is nearly as good but if you've got a CPU that's over 65W I would go big.

The phantom spirit 120 se is a better deal at $35 https://www.amazon.com/Thermalrlg...B0D95BKN6R.

But if you are looking for the best. The Thermalright Royal Pretor 130 Ultra is only $56 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FMFBSTB9?th=1

However the pretor 130 ultra is only slightly better than the phantom spirit. I recently upgraded to the pretor 130 ultra from the Phantom spirit 120 se. And i gained around 3-4c drop on my 5950x. Using same fan/paste/fan-profile.

just get a royal knight: https://www.amazon.com/Thermalrig...B0DCNV5NHP
does close to the same job but dont have to worry about ram clearance. during the rampocolypse can't really be choosey on which ram you get so leaves you more flexible.

Is it really that similar in performance to the PA120?

close enough thats it not a big deal until you start getting into the 200w+ chips. which if you're looking at air you're not going to be running a high wattage cpu in the first place like most people.
