Hogwarts Legacy on Switch is a playable but heavily downgraded port, while the Switch 2 upgrade sharply improves the experience with much better graphics and far shorter load times. The digital version can be upgraded through the eShop, and the Switch 2 version can be downloaded and played without keeping the Switch 1 cartridge once the upgrade is unlocked. Digital Deluxe adds cosmetics and a battle arena for a small extra cost. The game is set about 100 years before the books, with no Harry Potter specific spoilers.

  • Switch 1 digital owners who want the Switch 2 version cheaper because you can buy the Switch 1 digital download and then purchase the Switch 2 upgrade in the eShop, and the Switch 2 version can be played after upgrading without needing to keep the Switch 1 version installed.

  • People who are turned off by long loading screens because commenters said the Switch version has significantly longer zone-to-zone loads, while the Switch 2 update has much better loading behavior and looks fantastic.

  • Players who want the Digital Deluxe extras for a small price bump because the Digital Deluxe Edition includes cosmetics and a battle arena, and one commenter said it was worth the extra $1.50.

  • Switch 1 owners who already bought DLC and expect the upgrade to carry it over because one commenter said that if you buy the $10 upgrade, you have to get a new DLC for the Switch 2 version.

  • Players hoping to avoid the cartridge entirely via a borrowing workaround because multiple commenters pushed back that the cartridge is still required for this game (even if you try to borrow and upgrade).

I think it's $10 to upgrade to Switch 2 edition. I also heard you can borrow the cartridge from a friend or library and pay the Switch 2 upgrade and not need the cartridge anymore to play.

Don't think that's how the cartridge works. Still required
For most games, yes. But not for this game.
You can absolutely borrow the Switch 1 cartridge, purchase the Switch 2 upgrade through the menu, and download the Switch 2 digital version directly to your Switch 2. No cartridge required when playing the Switch 2 version.

That's exactly how it works for this game. You play through the intro and then on the main menu there is an option for a discount on the S2 version. This actually adds a DLC to your account that is the discount and the S2 version will only be $10 for you. At any point you can give the cart back (or return a borrowed virtual card), it's not needed for the discount or the Switch 2 game. This only works for Hogwarts Legacy since they have this unique setup for the discount.

From what I've read, this game is an exception because of how they set up the Switch 2 version. Haven't tried it myself, but I've seen people post here that it works (don't need the cartridge after getting the upgraded version). You need to play to a certain point in the game (relatively early) before you can get the upgrade.
It's all very strange, and maybe a deliberate way to price discriminate (on a title they've literally given away on PC, and nearly give away on consoles).

Didn't do the borrowing thing so can't comment on that.

CAN comment on the game - beat on PS5, Xbox One, and Switch to try all versions.

Game is totally there, totally playable, but significantly downgraded for Switch, both in terms of graphics and for the added loads between zones. Still amazing that they got it to work at all, and still totally enjoyable.

On Switch 2 "update", it looks fantastic and doesn't have the long loads. Like a version halfway between Xbox One and PS5.

Also, if you just play the Switch version on Switch 2 (without the upgrade purchase), load times are significantly shorter.

That is great to hear because the loading time entering and leaving the buildings in the village about turned me off the whole game

They want a lot more for the switch 2 version. Would it be cheaper to buy the switch version and get the upgrade or does that path only work for the cartridge version?
They want $29.99 for the regular and $34.99 for the deluxe for the switch 2.

This works for digital download. I bought the Switch 1 digital and the Switch 2 upgrade last week, both directly from the eShop. If you have automatic downloads, it will download and install both the Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions - I uninstalled the Switch 1 version before starting the game and haven't had issues.

Quick question about the plot of the game. I read it's a prequel to the books. Are there any spoilers for the books in the game? My daughter just got into HP and hasn't finished the series yet but wants to play the game. Just want to see if she can without spoilers.
