TurboTax Deluxe desktop is the main value pick here for people who want guided tax prep with brokerage imports, stock sales, and even many rental or self employment returns without paying for Premier. The desktop version is praised for handling multiple federal returns, keeping data local, and offering clearer interview style guidance than online. The biggest catch is Windows 11 support, since Windows 10 is no longer compatible. State e file still costs extra, and some complex K 1 or business cases may still need more hand holding.

Common Questions (6)

  • TurboTax Deluxe desktop can handle stock sales, brokerage imports, and Schedule K-1 forms, including capital loss carryovers and many investment types. The main difference versus Premier is extra guidance, not the underlying forms, so Deluxe is enough if you're comfortable entering the data.

  • No. TurboTax 2025 desktop requires Windows 11 and will not install or run on Windows 10, even with ESU support. If you can't upgrade, the practical alternatives are TurboTax Online or a virtual machine running Windows 11.

  • Yes. Deluxe desktop can import 1099-B and other investment data directly from supported brokerages, and it can also import .TXF files. It does not rely on the limited online-version workflow, which is why many investment users prefer the desktop edition.

  • Costco's $10 bonus is an in-product credit that can be applied to state e-file fees or other add-ons inside TurboTax. Amazon's $10 bonus is a gift card, which is easier to spend elsewhere but does not directly reduce TurboTax add-on costs.

  • TurboTax Deluxe desktop can handle 1099-NEC self-employment income and generate Schedule C. The confusion usually comes from TurboTax Online, where Deluxe is more limited and may push you to upgrade.

  • The desktop download can be installed on up to 5 computers and can file up to 5 federal returns. State e-file is still extra, and each additional state download usually costs more.

Remember if you have Windows 10 you won't be able to use it. I received an email from turbo tax late last year saying you need windows 11. My PC is old and cannot be upgraded to 11.

Anyone know if TurboTax Business will go on sale? Last few years it was included in this sale for $113, this year it is $144. I have a multi member LLC so AFAIK I can't use the Home+Business option.

There are many workarounds to upgrade to Windows 11 on a "non-compliant" PC.

Amazon will likely match the Costco price on 1/19/26 and add in a $10 gift card which we have seen over the past few years to match the Costco $10 credit. Suprisingly they didn't have the year end deal this year, guessing they pushed it back to match the Costco date, I will update this post with links once I find the Amazon listing with $10 Gift Card.
At the moment Costco seems to be the better deal because they provide a $10 credit in the app (which state filers can apply towards $25 e-file or towards an edition upgrade). If Amazon is offering any inducement theyre not touting it.

I went as far as checkout and still no gift card or other credit. Costco price is good until Feb 8. Amazon doesn't state a deadline.

Yes, Amazon does offer a gift card - are you using the right link?

This is what they sent me, care to share the workaround for us that can't get 11? "Hi Valued Customer,We're reaching out with this important follow-up notice regarding the end of support from Microsoft for Windows 10 and its impact on TurboTax Desktop software. TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025 and beyond won't be compatible with devices using Windows 10, including those with an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program purchased from Microsoft. To use TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025, your computer will need to run on Microsoft Windows 11 operating system. If you don't plan on upgrading to Windows 11, we recommend using TurboTax Online, which will work on any supported web browser. If you have a Mac computer, your computer will need to run on macOS Sonoma 14 operating system (or later). For more resources and additional information about this change, please refer to the help article: How does the end of support for Windows 10 affect my TurboTax Desktop experience? Thanks for being a part of the TurboTax family.Warm regards,The TurboTax Team"

You are confusing two different things - the previous poster said you can upgrade your Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 even if Microsoft says the PC doesn't meet the minimum hardware specs - there are workarounds to force the Win11 upgrade.

There is no workaround to running TT on a Windows 10 PC*

ETA * If you want to get technical, you can install VMWare Workstation on a Windows 10 PC and then install and run a Windows 11 guest OS in a virtual machine there. VMWare Workstation is free now and getting Windows 11 installed and activated is easy. At that point you are still running Turbotax on a Windows 11 (virtual) PC - the host operating system just happens to be Windows 10.

That time of year again. That time to give the same advice: get a local accountant to do your taxes. Not a firm TT bought with trained robots filling out their templates, but an actual human tax accountant. They'll charge you a few hundred bucks. They will also get you a higher return - more than compensating for what you paid them./rant/steps-off-soapbox
If you are primarily W2 income, there is very little an accountant can do to reduce the taxes you owe. And even if you are 1099, you can still accomplish the same with tax software, but is a little more challenging.

That wasn't the price last year for this product - are you sure you didn't buy the Federal Edition that didn't come with one free state last year?

Show the full name of the product you bought last year, what is the "......" part that is missing?
