Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

Yep. My very elderly parents are still using XP too. My aunt's PC, she always has latest win os, that's a different story. Multiple infections over the years.
Pro hackers are not interested in the average PC users. The best security protocol is to keep a good image file of the operating system on a backup drive. Put important data on an extended logic partition and also make an image file of this partition on a backup drive. Turn off the backup drive when not in use. This method isolates hackers from accessing the recovery data.

Most infections come from the web browser, emails, or external devices like USB. Use Sandboxie or equivalent to minimize this type of malicious attacks.

Reviews are not that great.
I have used TT for 20+ years, and a few years I was with HR block, and then a few more years purchased both to duplicate all the calculations. After these comparisons I have been doing TT for the last few years b/c I recall HR block was not that great whenever brokerage handling required to be slightly above basic for the year. Deluxe level customer (paychecks + very basic brokerage usage).
It appears a few things are true as of today:
- For worry-free tax experience, TT keeps being top of the line product / fewest hiccups with one-off tax situations. It costs a few more bucks than HR block, but I am happy to pay for that.
- based on reviews, TT seems to have no customer service now (like the rest of the products) so you pay for the product and you get what you get and you won't even get refund if it doesn't work.
So we are effectively in the "we don't care how you do your taxes" territory and with only a couple of companies in the market, choices to get your problem solved are not that great.
Have I missed anything, like another good product, which will be superior to TT, even if for more $$? I see no reason to pay an accounting firm, given my simple tax situation, and 20+ years experience doing it on my own.

a few days before I got the email. Wait a week just to be sure. The purchase from TT has to post first. I bet it hasnt even posted.
It actually immediately showed the termporary charge on the Chase website! Perhaps when it turns permanent then the credit will be recognized??

I am similar to you in that I buy both versions as well occasionally and compare. It is clear TT is just trying to maximize their profits by providing as little customer service as possible. Where I find most of the support is in their community forums. Also, H&RB is getting very close to being as comprehensive as TT. What bothers me most with TT is that they deliberately hide information on problems in their software. They have critical updates almost every week, yet refuse to provide what these issues are. I have been bitten several times, once requiring amending 3 years of returns.

I'm totally over it with TT and went h&r block, $25 deluxe with state in the newegg deal.
It may be better now, but I tried H&R about 3 years ago. It missed no state taxes on retirement in NY. I went with TurboTax the next year and it found this. I had to submit an amended return for the previous year. H&R may have had it, but it didn't alert me like TurboTax did.

If it is the same as past years then the sale price will be the same, the only difference is that Costco offers a $10 Turbotax credit (towards eFile) while Amazon offers a $10 Amazon giftcard.
