Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

Is this better than the Costco deal?
Depends. The Amazon deal will get you 5% if you use a Prime card, and a $10 Amazon gift card. The Costco deal will get you some percentage back (maybe 4% if you use a 2% credit card and are an Executive member) and $10 credit you can use towards things like state e-file fees. If you are are going to pay Turbotax/Intuit at least $10 more anyway, the deals are pretty similar. If you aren't (because you will print and mail your state returns or you don't have any state returns), then the Amazon deal is clearly better.

I'm a full time W2 employee but also recently started an s Corp for contract work. Is there one version of Turbo Tax that will handle both of these?

No. You will need TurboTax Business for your S-corp and another TurboTax version for your personal.

I have used it in the past without a problem. This year, I used Amazon free shipping credits to get Turbotax, but then I had to buy an additional state and used the Amex offer and got the $20. My experience is that as long as the charge is directly with Turbotax/Intuit, you should get the credit.
P.S. Multiple people report having used Amex and the Fidelity discount to order the software. It's not just Wolve3, and I haven't heard anyone with any issues getting the credit.
Interesting. That's a better deal by a few dollars. I am always weary of affiliate programs but AMEX offers hasn't really failed me.

It would come to $35.98 vs. Amazon is $37.31 (after the $10 Amazon gift card) and both using NJ taxes.
I guess it's not enough to matter and I can always use the Amazon gift card. But, you are right that it is cheaper.

Thanks!

So, I just downloaded and installed TT and after I put in the code, it gave me an offer to switch to the Premier online version for free. It only let you do ONE fed & state, but it's way cheaper than buying it online.

I mean if you are fine with using the online / web version, feel free. But people have already posted that the desktop and web versions are not the same.

TT lack of support for W10 made me and several friends switch to H&R.

Plus can get H&R Tax Deluxe with State plus one of Bitdefender, Nod, Mbam, etc for $24.99 at Newegg.

I don't see any details or additional information through the app. Just the following: Top highlights
  • Gift Card is affixed inside a mini envelope
  • TurboTax Desktop Edition is download software which you install on your computer for use
It doesn't show on my app either. You have to go to the desktop site to get more info about the e-filing.

Just a note that this year's version was not able to import last year's pdf file created by H&R Block software, so I have to enter everything manually.

Agree the deals are pretty similar. For me, I ended up going with Costco because, on top of the effective 4% back on the Costco purchase, that $10 Amazon gift card means I won't get 5% back (using my Amazon CC) on that future $10 Amazon purchase, whereas the $10 Costco credit that I will be using toward e-filing my state taxes would probably just get me 2% back. And I'm always concerned about someone running off with the physical Amazon gift card when it gets mailed to me, plus there's the small hassle of having to enter the gift card #.

This is the best summary I've found: https://thefinancebuff.com/tax-so...sktop.html

In general, TT online is more expensive, less powerful, and more susceptible to upsells. Which is why they want to move people from TT desktop to TT online.

You do need Premier for those, if you want the easy-question format. sure, all Turboxtax offers all forms, but no one buys TurboxTax to fill-in the forms
Your statement is false for TurboTax Deluxe Desktop Edition. You are presented with the easy question format and guided through those forms along with importing them from banking and investment websites.
Your statement is correct for TurboTax Deluxe Online Edition, which does not handle investments, rental properties, etc and prompts for an upgrade to premium if you try.
Two different products with extremely similar names but different abilities which cause confusion every year, and now causes AI responses to answer incorrect when the question is asked

Such a weird bug in their software. I've noticed that both Intuit and H&R Block have put minimal effort into their desktop software lately, focusing on the online version more (apparently). Any time they have to add a new section, it's kind of half baked. And in the case of TT, looks like it's designed for the web version primarily. They update for tax code of course, but the UI doesn't get update or bug fixes in many cases. And there are some items that are not handled well by any tax software, desktop or online (e.g. mortgage interest deduction, foreign tax credit, etc.).
I haven't had any issues with Foreign Tax Credits but Municipal Bonds can be a real pain. I have to report both every year.

And you're right, they will probably try to phase out the desktop version. Years ago, I used TT Premier Online and liked it before switching to the Deluxe download version.
