I use it as a top cover that I remove before going to bed. Even if one of my cats gifts me with a liquidy mess, it does not soak through to my bedding. The liquid floats on top the cover until you can soak it up with paper towels. Then I run it under the kitchen sink before washing.
Make sure to dry on 'air dry' or 'low'. The one I have is several yrs old and still waterproof 👍
