I tried the frothing Thing Once or twice, but I didn't find that it adds enough value, but I'm pretty sure that the temperatures get higher and the pressure gets higher so more wear on the machine.
If I want to have froth milk, I usually froth it with a whisking stick instead though. And I use a little bit of boiling water from my electric kettle to up the temperature.
Truthfully I don't have enough experience in espresso in general to be making claims about whether it's good or bad, but let me just say it's baseline. I can tell that much.
