This DeWALT 192 piece mechanic set stands out as a strong starter kit for car work, with broad socket coverage, deep 1 quarter inch and 3 eighth inch ranges, included extensions, and all 6 point sockets that help avoid rounding. The selection feels practical rather than padded, with no skipped sizes or filler bits, and the sockets are useful for common jobs like oil changes and water pump work. The main drawbacks are the ratchets, which feel weak in backdrag, and the case, which is heavy, bulky, and can let sockets fall out or stick. A solid all around socket set if you want coverage more than a fancy case.
new mechanics or people building a first "starter mechanic's set" because commenters call it a strong starter set with a deep socket range across 1/4 and 3/8 drives, plus included extensions, and it avoids "token" wrenches and 1/4 hex bits that inflate piece count.
home car owners who want one reliable socket set for common jobs like oil changes, transmission work, and water pump replacements because one commenter says it's the only set they need for those tasks and even got a broken ratchet replaced within a week.
people who need a dependable spare full set for the car because one buyer specifically recommends it as a spare full set you can count on and says they waited about a year before buying.
track/mechanic hobbyists who want a broad socket selection for wrenching and plan to add wrenches separately because one commenter says they'll use it as their track set and only needs to get a set of wrenches to round it out.
people who want a lightweight kit to keep on a fender or move around easily because multiple commenters note the set is very heavy (around 37 lb) and the case takes up lots of space.
buyers who care a lot about ratchet feel/backdrag because one commenter says the ratchets are weak in backdrag (and another notes the ratchet mechanism question), even though they still like the overall set.
people who want a perfectly secure case that keeps every socket retained without fuss because commenters report case retention issues where some sockets don't stay in well and others require effort or prying to pop out.
mechanics who need an all-in-one kit that includes a screwdriver-style handle for 1/4" sockets because one owner calls out a glaring omission: no screwdriver-style handle for the 1/4" sockets when this is the only kit they have.

Is this actually a good starter set for a new mechanic? Apparently a local social worker runs a program that helps poor youths get into and complete mechanic training and land their first jobs, and they could use mechanics set donations. Would love to donate one of these and partially defray the cost by selling the other, but never having worked as a mechanic, I'd like to make sure it would suit the purpose to a decent degree. Otherwise I'll just re-sell them both.
The main thing a mechanic will eventually want to add is impact-rated sockets.. but that usually comes later for most.

Anyone know how the ratchet mechanisms compare to nicer ratchets, i.e. do they feel nice with low backdrag?
Edit: Snagged before it goes OOS, lol
It has been said that the ratchets are lacking and are weak in backdrag, and Project Farm on YT confirms the ratchets are indeed quite weak.
In my estimation, warranty eases those concerns.
I have plenty of ratchets, I did not have many 6 point sockets or variety of extensions.
This case takes up a lot of space when open. Like, it wont be resting on your fender well, unless it's a Mack, lol.
The case is my main beef with this. Some sockets simply fall out willy nilly. Others have to be pried out with a screw driver. Because of this, I switched them over to socket holders and use the many tool bags I have laying around.
I still consider this set one of my best buys ever.
