This DeWALT 192 piece mechanic set stands out as a strong starter kit for car work, with broad socket coverage, deep 1 quarter inch and 3 eighth inch ranges, included extensions, and all 6 point sockets that help avoid rounding. The selection feels practical rather than padded, with no skipped sizes or filler bits, and the sockets are useful for common jobs like oil changes and water pump work. The main drawbacks are the ratchets, which feel weak in backdrag, and the case, which is heavy, bulky, and can let sockets fall out or stick. A solid all around socket set if you want coverage more than a fancy case.
Common Questions (5)
Yes. It covers common car jobs like oil changes, transmission work, and water pump replacement, with a broad range of 1/4" and 3/8" deep sockets plus extensions. The main gap is that you may still want to add wrenches and, later, impact-rated sockets.
The case is bulky and heavy, and some sockets can fall out while others are tight enough to need prying. It does keep many pieces in place better than typical briefcase-style sets, but it may be better suited to socket holders or a tool bag.
The ratchets are reported to be weaker than nicer ratchets, with low backdrag not being a strong point. The sockets and overall coverage are the main value, and the warranty helps offset the ratchet weakness.
It uses all 6-point sockets, which helps reduce rounding on nuts and bolts, and it does not skip sizes. It also avoids filler pieces like 1/4" hex bits or token wrenches that inflate the piece count.
It weighs just under 37 pounds. That makes it solidly built, but also cumbersome to carry and open.

Is this actually a good starter set for a new mechanic? Apparently a local social worker runs a program that helps poor youths get into and complete mechanic training and land their first jobs, and they could use mechanics set donations. Would love to donate one of these and partially defray the cost by selling the other, but never having worked as a mechanic, I'd like to make sure it would suit the purpose to a decent degree. Otherwise I'll just re-sell them both.
The main thing a mechanic will eventually want to add is impact-rated sockets.. but that usually comes later for most.

Anyone know how the ratchet mechanisms compare to nicer ratchets, i.e. do they feel nice with low backdrag?
Edit: Snagged before it goes OOS, lol
It has been said that the ratchets are lacking and are weak in backdrag, and Project Farm on YT confirms the ratchets are indeed quite weak.
In my estimation, warranty eases those concerns.
I have plenty of ratchets, I did not have many 6 point sockets or variety of extensions.
This case takes up a lot of space when open. Like, it wont be resting on your fender well, unless it's a Mack, lol.
The case is my main beef with this. Some sockets simply fall out willy nilly. Others have to be pried out with a screw driver. Because of this, I switched them over to socket holders and use the many tool bags I have laying around.
I still consider this set one of my best buys ever.
