Beware: it's not sold or shipped by Amazon. Seller reviews have a bunch of recent negative mentions of used items being sold as new.

The model E has significant differences with the Fenix 8. The hardware is not exactly the same.

It's missing the Sapphire glass.

Fenix E has the older Elevate Gen 4 sensor while many watches, including Fenix 8, have the newer Gen 5 sensor. Gen 5 is not new and Gen 4 is already 2-3 watch generations old, lacks some measures, and is a bit less accurate.

I guess they had a good deal of old sensors lying around and wanted to give people a cheaper Fenix option with updated software and OLED display.

the thing to me after over a decade of owning Garmins where every 3 years they completely stop not only software updates but even basic bug fixes is that the Fenix E has the same core software as the Fenix8

so for $500 you are going to get half a decade of support which may not sound important to some people but if you use a lot of features on the watch it is

I could care less about the wrist HR sensor as all wrist HR is basically garbage, if you are a serious athlete you should be using a HRM belt for any accuracy

the HR sensor btw is still newer that the Fenix6 generation which was fine

also many people will not understand the importance of being able to run FOUR apps at the same time during an activity instead of just two

but if you are a serious athlete, that's huge and can add a lot of features

if the Fenix8/ FR970 was only $500 the Fenix E would be pointless

but the Fenix8 is $1000 and FR970 is $700 so only $500 seems like a great deal

personally I'm waiting another generation

I'm the opposite. I think the sensor is the most important hardware component. If the new Garmin doesn't have a new and improved sensor, I see no need to upgrade. The sensor isn't just for hardcore workouts. It's used to track you all day, sleep, recovery, etc. Maybe it's better to compare this watch to a Fenix 7 which has the Gen 4 sensor or the 7 Pro which has the same Gen 5 sensor as the 8. Then there is the Epic gen 2 which I believe also has the Gen 5 sensor. All these watches have been on Slickdeals for less than $500.

So calling this watch the same as the Fenix 8 is misleading and incorrect. You seem to have good reputation so not sure what compelled you to make such a claim. No SDer wants to see sensational headlines; just facts.

And some of the multiband GPS capability. The 8 is a certified dive computer. And it's missing the speaker and mic.

A quick google shows the 8 has the newer heart rate sensor, better multiband GPS with SatIQ, a mic, a speaker, and maybe the biggest for some people, the 8 is a certified dive computer unlike the E. That's huge if you dive at all.

I recently purchased the fenix 8. I like it allot, but I'd say if you can get by with what you have now then wait for the 9. It's so slow that map rendering for nav, weather, or whatever is completely useless. The speaker is so soft it is also useless for calls or phone assistant. I paid about $500 after stacking deals on black Friday, but I could have gotten the venu4 or cheaper forerunner and had the same useful feature set.
