The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 3D is a strong pick for anyone who can actually play 3D Blu ray at home, since it was deliberately shot to use the format and the 3D presentation is described as the best way to watch it. The disc also draws interest because 3D playback can still work through older 3D TVs, projectors, VR headsets, or a PS VR setup. The main caution is compatibility, since this release appears to be a European version and may not play on US players. The listing also needs careful checking for format and digital copy details.

Common Questions (4)

  • A working 3D setup can require a 3D TV or projector, 3D glasses, and a 3D-capable Blu-ray player, which are harder to find now. Alternatives mentioned include a VR headset or a compatible Samsung 3D monitor, but they are not plug-and-play.

  • This listing appears to be a European release and may not play on US players. The region-coding concern is specific enough that checking the exact disc/region before buying is important.

  • Yes, PS VR 1 can be used for 3D movie playback, and it can work with just a regular DualShock 4 instead of motion controllers. A camera is still attached in the reported setup, so that part may still be needed.

  • The movie was deliberately shot for 3D, with framing and scene composition meant to use depth effects, so 3D is the intended viewing format. In 2D, some scenes can feel oddly framed or out of place.

I have refused to buy a new TV until passive 3D comes back as a standard boring feature. My behavior has been far less persuasive than I hoped. I thought maybe there'd be enough people like me out there. But stereoscopic enthusiasts are a pretty small minority in TV consumers.
There are ultra short throw projectors that have passive 3D capability. Unfortunately, I don't think 3D will ever make a comeback. I've kept my 2nd gen LG OLED around for almost 10 years now just because it can do 3D. Still looks incredible.

3D is cyclical, I still have my PS3 and Sony 24inch 3D screen I still use

Yeah the sales of 3D tv's were poor, which is why it didn't take off. I think it likely they will start making these movies for VR headsets. Given now more people have those than ever had 3D tv's.

If you don't plan on watching 3D with others, using a vr headset or the currently discounted samsung 3d monitor works just fine. However such a setup is not exactly plug-in-play
Question on the PS VR 1. Can you watched 3D movies with just the headset or are the camera and movement sensor controllers required? I have a PS4 and would throw down $50 for just a headset to watch a handful of 3D Blu rays that I already own. But I would want to spend $100+ on a full VR set.

You're talking about U.S. only. The rest of the world loves 3D

I can tell you that I use mine without motion controllers (just using a regular Dualshock4) and it works…just recently watched Dredd again.

But I do have a camera attached to the TV that fires up once the headset turns on so I can't comment on that part. Maybe someone can update on that part.

Do you mean 'active 3D' ?

Unless you're using the movie theatre style projections which cost upwards of tens of thousands.

I still love my 3d movies. I use my projector and PS3. A few years ago I bought a bunch of movies and glasses for $3-$5 each

I think I watched a movie with a headset and controller. It's been awhile. The thing I didn't like was the Blu-ray horizontal resolution was cut in half to 960 from 1920. I watched the original Jurassic Park. I enjoyed it, but the experience was sub optimal. I think a 4k 3D TV would be best with passive glasses, or 1080p active glasses 3d. The best way I could put this is if a picture was the same size on a projector or a TV, most people would prefer to watch on a TV. Honestly though anyway you can enjoy yourself is fine. Not all the other ways are doo doo.
