This is one of those movies that was "made for 3d" like Avatar, where in this case Peter Jackson made many deliberate cinematography choices to showcase the technology. For example, an early scene features a number of characters having a rowdy dinner together, and many shot choices are specifically set up to take advantage of 3d effects. I found when I watched this movie in "regular" 2d the scenes were kind of odd and felt a little out of place (like "why are we spending 10 seconds looking at the pantry?") until I remembered that PJ was trying to be creative with 3d tech.

It seems pretty difficult and/or expensive to get the mostly deprecated 3d home theater experience these days (3d TV, 3d glasses, 3d blu ray player, all hard to find), which is a little bit of a bummer just in terms of some creative energy that went into the tech a decade or so ago. But I would say that the "optimal" experience for this movie/this trilogy is going to be watching in 3d. My 2c, good deal for a 3d blu ray if you have the capabilities to play it in 3d.

If you don't plan on watching 3D with others, using a vr headset or the currently discounted samsung 3d monitor works just fine. However such a setup is not exactly plug-in-play

FYI - This appears to be a European version so it may not play on US players.

3D disks are often not region locked. I dont think that the Hobbit disks were locked.

I have refused to buy a new TV until passive 3D comes back as a standard boring feature. My behavior has been far less persuasive than I hoped. I thought maybe there'd be enough people like me out there. But stereoscopic enthusiasts are a pretty small minority in TV consumers.

In my experience, most UK Bluray releases were region A and worked in the US. However, there is reason to be concerned on this one based on this: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Th...gionCoding

For people who want to watch 3D without VR glasses, I assume people know that some projectors are the only currently sold products with 3D. Most theatrical 3D showings I attend are nearly empty with the exception of the Avatar movies where for some reason people are OK with that in 3D. Perhaps James Cameron 3D = good, all other 3D = bad. I always pick 3D over 2D when available.

Ditto... I had a bunch of 3D movies way back when. To demonstrate my system to people I played 3D Terminator Genisys golden gate/city destruction scene. People always did a OMG and some people even asked to see it again! Those days are gone. 4K is great but some 3D movies were better. Hopefully they will go back to supporting 3D again.

If there is a movie I want to see, and it has a 3d version I will opt for 3d. I'm not crazy for it, but it is a fun novelty for me. For my home setup I have a tv from 2016 which was the last year for 3d TVs, and there was a small over lap when tvs were going from 1080p to 4k plus they supported 3d. That is important because at 1080p a 3d Blu-ray resolution would be cut in half to send an image to each eye using passive glasses. Active glasses didn't have that issue, but I prefer passive. Anyway, a 4k tv could do full resolution for passive glasses. Oleds of that era had issues with burn in so I tried to avoid those. I ended up getting a 65" Sony, X900C. It has an IPS panel probably made by LG, and it works great. The picture isn't perfect, and they probably made some compromises to make the tv so thin. The 3d picture is excellent, and I can even use the Real3d glasses you get at the theater. YouTube video displayed in SBS or side by side can be watched in 3d by a couple of options in the tv menu. Even using emulation depending on the core you can play in 3d, but max resolution has to be 1080p. If you go higher the tv won't recognize it. I've had fun with it, and if you familiarize yourself self with these older model tvs you can keep an eye out on used selling sites to pick up a good deal.

One of the reasons I still haven't upgraded my 13 year old 70" 1080P TV lol. We're out there!
