The Steam Deck OLED stands out as a compact, premium handheld with strong game compatibility, unique trackpads, and an OLED screen that is the main visual upgrade. The open SteamOS setup makes it easy to tinker, stream, and even expand storage later, with 1TB models getting an anti glare display and the option to add a large microSD card or swap the SSD. The main knocks are its chunky size, heavier feel, and the 1280x800 resolution, which can make text look soft. Battery life also gets called out as the one area that could be better, making it a strong fit if those tradeoffs do not bother you.

  • parents buying a handheld for a kid who has Steam and an Xbox library because the Steam Deck is described as "dummy proof" and the open ecosystem lets kids tinker later (Linux/OS install/driver & hardware upgrades) while still being able to just play right away

  • buyers who are okay with adding storage after purchase because multiple commenters suggest starting with 512GB and expanding with a microSD card or upgrading the internal SSD (including plans to drop in 2TB/4TB)

  • handheld streamers using Sunshine/Moonlight from a gaming PC because commenters say text is fine and that the Deck's 1280x800 resolution is the main limiting factor (so it fits best when you're not expecting a higher-res handheld experience)

  • people who mainly want to play Steam games (and don't want to deal with extra setup) because commenters say Steam versions usually avoid anti-cheat issues and recommend sticking to Steam titles if you hate tinkering

  • people who want a lighter, more portable alternative to a heavy handheld with detachable controllers because one commenter said they might get rid of their Legion Go since they never use the detached controllers and it's quite heavy

  • people who are sensitive to device size and weight because multiple commenters call the Steam Deck "huge and heavy" and say they ordered one and sold it after a couple weeks

  • buyers who need a brighter, outdoor-friendly screen experience without glare tradeoffs because commenters discuss glossy vs anti-glare/etched differences and note anti-glare/etched performs better outdoors while glossy is more reflective

  • parents who want a straightforward "no extra steps" Xbox experience for kids because commenters specifically frame the Deck as better for Steam titles and warn about Game Pass and anti-cheat limitations

  • people who want to play Xbox Game Pass games directly on the device because commenters warn the Steam Deck can't run Xbox Game Pass games without installing Windows or using streaming, and some multiplayer/anti-cheat titles may not work

  • buyers who hate tinkering or don't have time to troubleshoot non-Steam launchers because commenters say games launched via Heroic/other launchers can run into many issues that may require changing Proton versions, editing launch commands, using desktop mode, or repeated attempts

Does it work for any multiplayer games? Or lack of anti-cheat a buster?
There are plenty of games that work on it MP. My most recent are Arc Raiders, and Hell Divers 2 (especially with the new slim install - but probably stay below 6 difficulty, higher levels might get too many enemies for the deck to run well)
If you want to check a specific game (many that arent listed as verified still work) search the game name and "ProtonDB" which will give you specific user accounts of if the game runs, what settings were used, and what issues the user experienced
Note: I dont play cod (which I beleive doesnt work) or fortnite.

They're not releasing a new steam deck
Let's hope they don't for a while. The current console cycle is stalled, and the improved hardware isn't leading to better games. I'd be fine with a 10yr steam deck life. Less resources leads to more creativity, retro consoles proved that.

The 512GB OLED was also sold out for me, but I checked a few times and saw it available again. However, I had to keep retrying to checkout and pay and it eventually came through.

Still have an OG deck, would love to upgrade, but gonna wait until they finally step up from 1280x800. I have a gaming PC, so can stream any game at high settings, but text still sucks to look at.If another sale on the logitech G-cloud bring the price even lower Ill sell my deck and get that.
I returned the G cloud after only a couple of days, my Pocket Evo and Odin Portal 2 are just collecting dust, and I'm thinking of selling them because I have the SD OLED. I only stream from my PC and PS5 Pro.

the STEAMDECK cannot play the XBOX games from GAMEPASS unless you install Windows on it or play through streaming, it also cannot play a lot of multiplayer games because game companies don't give the anticheat support for the STEAM OScheck their library and games they likes to play, if they are mostly MP games with anticheat that does not have support and/or gamepass games then just find a used ROG ALLY ZIEXTREME, LENOVO LEGION GO, etc used handheld PCs are the best bang for buck on the market... the STEAMDECK retains it's value because of all the software support it gets so even if you don't like it you most likely will be able to sell it for the price you paid for it
This is a little off regarding anti-cheat on Steam Deck. Steam versions of games usually don't have any issues with anti-cheat. Games that run off of Heroiclauncher(combined launcher for GOG, amazon, Epic, etc) run into a lot of issues. Many can be worked around with some tinkering like using a different version of proton, editing launch commands, reinstalling or launching from desktop mode. Others just need to be launched multiple times until the game permissions thing, anti-cheat software and/or game launcher finally opens. Some may be impossible to launch although I've mostly only run into that with non-Steam games. I haven't run into any issues playing multiplayer on a Steam Deck. I've been able to get games running that Steam has marked as incompatible and should not work. It just depends on how much effort you want to put in to getting it to work.

If you hate tinkering or just don't have the time to, then stick with Steam versions of games.

If you like tinkering go look into undervolting, decky loader with lossless scaling, and CryoUtilities 2.0. There are also websites that allow the community to share how they managed to get Steam and non-steam games running.

You can always go with the 512gb glossy screen and get an anti-glare screen protector if you want to give you flexibility.
