The Steam Deck OLED stands out as a compact, premium handheld with strong game compatibility, unique trackpads, and an OLED screen that is the main visual upgrade. The open SteamOS setup makes it easy to tinker, stream, and even expand storage later, with 1TB models getting an anti glare display and the option to add a large microSD card or swap the SSD. The main knocks are its chunky size, heavier feel, and the 1280x800 resolution, which can make text look soft. Battery life also gets called out as the one area that could be better, making it a strong fit if those tradeoffs do not bother you.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The 512GB model can still be purchased by repeatedly clicking through checkout steps, and some buyers were able to complete the order after about half an hour of trying. It also gives you a cheaper path if you plan to add your own SSD or microSD storage later.

  • It is noticeably large and heavy compared with lighter handhelds, and that can be a dealbreaker if you want something compact. At the same time, the size is still considered premium and comfortable enough that some users prefer it over heavier devices like the Legion Go.

  • Yes. The 1TB model has an anti-glare screen, while the 512GB model is glossy. The SSD can be upgraded later, with 2TB 2230 drives mentioned as the practical ceiling and microSD cards also supported.

  • Steam games generally work best on SteamOS, and many multiplayer titles run fine, but Game Pass games do not run directly unless you install Windows or stream them. Non-Steam launchers and anti-cheat can require tinkering, so Steam versions are the safest choice if you want the least hassle.

  • The Steam Deck has stronger game compatibility, unique trackpads, and a more gaming-focused SteamOS that is easier to use. The Ally Z1 Extreme is more powerful, but the Deck is the better fit if you want broader Steam support and a more straightforward handheld experience.

Bought a 1TB OLED. Is this better than an Asus Rog Ally? I've got steam and Xbox library.

ROG ALLY Z1 extreme is more powerful but the Z1 version is awful... any STEAMDECK falls in power between these 2

the new white "XBOX ROG ALLY" has the same chipset as the steamdeck

the OLED screen is the main selling point of the device, as STEAMOS can now be installed on most PC handhelds. But the STEAMDECK has the most compatibility and the trackpads are also unique in the entire competition

Ok, thank you. So, would I be better off with this or the white Ally for a 10 & 13 year old that have steam and an Xbox library?Don't know if I want to fork out $1k.

FYI,
1tb = Anti-glare screen
512gb = Glossy

I went with glossy and swapped the SSD for a 2tb.
