Reverse osmosis (RO) systems remove nearly all dissolved minerals from water, including beneficial ones like calcium and magnesium. This results in water that is very pure but often tastes flat or bland due to the lack of minerals. Additionally, the absence of minerals can make the water slightly acidic, with a pH typically between 5.0 and 6.5.
To improve taste and balance pH, an alkaline filter is added as a final stage in some RO systems. This filter reintroduces essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium into the water. Doing so raises the pH to a more neutral or slightly alkaline level (typically 7.0–8.5), enhances flavor, and gives the water a smoother mouthfeel.
In short, the alkaline filter prevents flat water by restoring minerals removed during RO filtration, making the water more pleasant to drink and less acidic.

Reverse osmosis tips. Only use dow filmtec membranes. Everything else is worse and not worth savinga few bucks. Amazon sells the film tecs for 30.00. Ispring is a decent starter brand for kits. Tank and the autoshut off valve are the weakest link. Might switch them out ASAP. Bulk Reef Supply is your best friend for RO. They dont sell garbage. Pumps are silly IMO. I get 98-99% rejection without it. If you do get a pump, this one is crap. Get a flowtec or shurflo. The pressure tank, is most likely the first thing that breaks though, and it's very hard to get an American tank. USA Water Systems used to sell American tanks, but now it seems you have to buy the whole 500.00 us system to get the us tank. Pretty solid warranty though.

Just wanted to mention that alkaline water "benefits" are bunch of nonsense: https://www.mayoclinic.org/health...q-20058029

How can I be sure any RO system is not adding anything to my water?I mean something like thishttps://drclarkstore.com/blogs/ne...-particleshttps://www.sciencedirect.com/sci...6625000968
I think Dr Hulda Clark was a brilliant woman. Nice to see that her ideas are getting backed up by the official "main stream" scientific community

If you drink 1 liter of water a day, 528 gallons = 1999 liters, so 1999 days or close to 5.5 yrs

Is there actually well known brand that works well and you don't have to worry about filters and won't leak? I am spending a lot of money on Zero filters, not only cost but also constantly clog or uneven filter life.. a lot of plastic waste.

How safe do you think those minerals and metals from random sources? Why not just take supplement from known brands. Or just drink a glass of mineral water? I've been drinking Zero filters water which remo es everything and tastes fine to me.

How long does your RO membrane last with that level of TDS?
I usually change it every two years. Despite level of TDS. I also do membrane / "RO backflush" every 6 month.

This is less expensive than replacement RO membrane and filters for my current system from Watts Premier.

Is the pump only for those with low water pressure? (i.e. will the system still work when the pump eventually fails?)

My tap water is 800 ppm. Do I have to replace my filters 8x more than someone with 100 ppm?

That's with almost any filtering system. The filters are the most expensive part because that's basically all it is and the rest of it is just a skeleton that holds the filters. This should be no surprise.
The surprise is that you think the filters are the most expensive part.
I buy bulk filters so it works out to about $16 a set and membranes only need replaced every couple years with heavy use and up to 5 years with light use.
I make about 400 gallons a month for my saltwater aquarium systems and probably another 150 for drinking. It's not that expensive. The systems that take proprietary filters leave you paying the price they want you to pay. I buy larger amounts than most but you can buy smaller amounts on Amazon for carbon/sediment and such at around $5 a filter or less.

I was thinking of getting a RO system for a saltwater tank. The initial cost looks good but I think reviews complained about the motor failing and filter pricing. Anyone have a recommendation of what they use?
I only use bulkreefsupply.com They've done really well by me and my tank.

Are you getting your water from a toilet? Seriously my water isn't that good and it comes out of the tap at 40-60ppm and drop to 8ppm after the RO membrane. The answer to your question is basically yes, bad water will burn through filters much faster, it may not be 8x faster but it would be close.

I think ro systems never have clear filters because light would cause mold/mildew/bacteria/slime or something to grow on filters. I'm just assuming tho
That's not true, all of mine are clear and why would you have them out where they would get long term light exposure?
