This is made for devices that have a single USB-C port. You can use it if you want to power the device while simultaneously outputting video. I have a USB-C power supply that kind of does the same thing, ASUS - ROG 65W Charger Dock. It has a USB-C port to go to a device, then breaks out HDMI from the power supply. I only got it because there was a good deal. It works, but it's not worth the price. Typically people just use a cheaper USB hub or dock, they usually have USB Power Delivery input ports and HDMI output ports as well as a plethora of other ports.
Im guessing here. the reason for the frequent returns is
you need to have a USB-C port that supports video out, not all USB-c ports support video out so people are probably buying it and finding out the hard way that they don't have video out on their USB-C ports.
USB-C ports that support HDMI out do so via DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode), allowing them to send video signals like HDMI or DisplayPort directly; check your device's specs for "DP Alt Mode," a lightning bolt symbol (Thunderbolt), or look for a small "D" next to the port, as not all USB-C ports have this video capability, requiring a USB-C to HDMI adapter to convert the signal for a monitor or TV
This is a niche single cable USB C to HDMI adapter with 140W power passthrough, best for keeping a laptop, handheld, or other single port device charged while sending video to a TV or monitor. The clean setup is the main appeal, especially for travel or hiding the charger behind a screen. It is also described as 4K at 60Hz. The catch is that it only works when the USB C port supports video out through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, and it does not support HDMI ARC. It feels streamlined, but not as flexible as a USB C hub with extra ports.
travelers who want a clean single-cable setup to connect a laptop to a hotel TV because you can hide the charger behind the TV/monitor and it's designed for powering the device while outputting video.
people using a USB-C device with a single USB-C port that supports video out (DP Alt Mode/Thunderbolt) because it only works when the source supports HDMI video output, so it can provide HDMI plus charging in one cable.
Nintendo Switch owners who want a compact HDMI + charging adapter for travel because a similar-looking adapter was reported to work with Switch 2 after updating the adapter firmware for update 21.0.0.
buyers who specifically want HDMI and power passthrough with minimal clutter because commenters liked the streamlined "charging & data being combined" and the ability to route one cable behind the TV.
people whose USB-C port does not support video out (no DP Alt Mode/Thunderbolt) because the adapter only works if the USB-C port supports HDMI video output, and buyers may end up with no display output.
buyers who want more than HDMI + charging (extra USB/network ports) because commenters said a similarly priced USB-C hub/dock is more flexible and offers additional ports beyond this streamlined single-purpose adapter.
surround-sound users who rely on HDMI ARC from the TV because this adapter does not support HDMI ARC, so you may not get sound through your surround system.
owners trying to drive very specific ultrawide resolutions like 5120x1440 (49") because a commenter couldn't get that resolution working with multiple adapters/docks and suspected compatibility/firmware limitations.
It is discussed as a travel-friendly option for connecting a laptop or Nintendo Switch to a hotel TV, and a similar Hagibis adapter is reported to work with Switch 2 after a firmware update. The Switch 2 still requires a compatible video-output path, so firmware and device support matter.
No. It only works if the source USB-C port supports video out, typically via DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. Devices without USB-C video output will not send HDMI through it, so checking the manual or port markings first is important.
Yes. It is designed for single-USB-C-port devices and can power the device while simultaneously sending video, which makes it useful for a clean one-cable setup behind a TV or monitor.
Yes, it is described as 4K/60Hz. It is not expected to go beyond that class of output, so it is best suited for standard 4K displays rather than higher-refresh or ultrawide setups.
it says up to 4k, but wondering if this supports widescreen (49") monitors at 5120x1440. I've tried several adapters, including Rouge ally gaming charging dock, but haven't found one that support that resolution. (Laptop - Asus ZenBook - outputs that resolution on Sammy 49" OLED just fine when connected directly via HDMI or usb-c on LG 49"; That makes me think its a firmware issue with these adapters...)
Don't think so, it's more of a problem of the Switch 2's non-universal "USB" port, which prevents us from using any unauthorized dock or hub for display output.

That thing is pretty cool for travel with a Nintendo switch
Seems slightly cool, but I am not sure why I would use this when I can use a similarly priced USB-C hub with hdmi output, power passthrough, plus additional ports like USB and network. This is a tiny bit more streamlined while lacking flexibility.
Plus having to route the USB-C power cable behind the TV/monitor/whatever when it's actually powering the laptop on the completely other side of the cable seems silly and cumbersome.

This gives you a clean single cable connection to your device. You can hide the charger behind your TV to keep things from looking cluttered. A hub won't do that.
That said, if you need to break out more functions than just HDMI and charging, this isn't the solution for you.

This physically looks very similar to a Hagibis Switch 2 compatible adapter. Currently showing $24 but I got it a bit cheaper on AliE. I can confirm that this Hagibis adapter works with the Switch 2 (and Switch 1) after updating the adapter's firmware to work with Switch 2's notorious update 21.0.0 that broke all 3rd party docks. https://www.amazon.com/Hagibis-Sw...PPRV4?th=1
I have the same thought. This looks to be a very niche product, for only if you specially need a single cable that does one thing. The price is a bit high but it is slightly more streamlined if you really just need to do one thing.
Can someone help me understand why you would get this instead of a USB hub that does the same as this but also gives multiple USB outlets and memory card slots for the same price? Honest question.
