Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds are mainly praised for class leading active noise cancellation, strong sound, and a very comfortable fit, with several refurb purchases arriving in near new condition. They also pair well with phones and computers, and multipoint works in practice. The main cautions are Bose quality control and connection quirks, including left earbud pairing problems, occasional crackling, mono switching, and some charging or warranty surprises. Fit can still take some tweaking, and battery life is only average. A strong noise cancelling option if you can live with Bose's occasional reliability headaches.

Common Questions (5)

  • Some units are reported to have left-earbud pairing failures, crackling or buzzing, mono-audio glitches, and occasional charging problems. Battery life is also criticized by some as only around 6 hours, while others report their older units still holding about 70% capacity after heavy use.

  • Yes. The ANC is described as better than Sony XM5 and AirPods Pro 2, with some saying it is dramatically stronger in noisy environments like flights and the gym. The tradeoff is that fit can take some experimenting, and a few users report connection or mono-audio glitches.

  • They are widely described as very comfortable and secure, with several users saying they stay in better than Sony earbuds and work well for walking or the gym. Fit still varies by ear, so some people need to try different tips or add wings for extra stability.

  • If Bose support cannot fix a defective unit, replacements may be upgraded to the QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen after the old pair is sent back. Warranty and trade-in handling can vary, and some users report being offered refurb Gen 1 replacements in automated systems before escalating to chat.

  • Yes, they support multipoint. They can stay connected to a phone and computer at the same time, and the Bose app shows the active audio source. On Windows, disabling audio enhancements and the earbud microphone can help prevent unwanted hands-free mode and sound-quality drops.

This is an insane deal even for old pair. One of the most comfy; insanely good anc and sound quality earbuds I've bought.
I have to second everything this person said. I have tried many earbuds, many costing at least $250. These are by far my favorite due to how comfortable they are, sound quality and just incredible ANC that doesn't give off any sort of audible noise.
I'd like to try a Gen 2 but my OG's are still working well, although with probably only 70% battery capacity left after 3 years of frequent heavy use and well over 1,000 recharge cycles.

I have these earbuds

Pro:
pretty comfy
good ANC
Bose great support if something goes wrong

Con:
Connection not always the best
some quality issue. (Slight crackling & buzzing sound on the left earbud. This seems to be the norm for this particular earbuds and there is yet a fix for it).
Can't connect to multiple devices at once

These have quality control issues. The left earbud stops pairing after a while, and there is no way to reset the earbuds, making them useless afterward. I found many posts on Reddit describing the same issue, and unfortunately, none of the suggested reset steps worked for me. This is the first Bose product that has disappointed me and an expensive one as well.

How do these compare to the Sony buds? Thinking of getting these anyway since the deal is here and good but I'm asking just in case
The Bose stay better in the ear. The Sonys keep falling out. Big fan of the Bose!

If they're under warranty, you should reach out to Bose. Heck, even if they weren't under warranty any longer, I would still reach out to them to see if they would offer a courtesy replacement.

From my personal experience over the years, the left earbud can get weird at times where it won't initially connect when I put my earbuds in. Simple fix for me is to just keep the right bud in my ear as that one usually always connects and place the left bud in the case, close the case, then open and put it back in my ear. It usually restarts the left earbud and forces it to connect again to whatever the right earbud is connected to. You should also make sure your firmware is updated through the Bose mobile app. If none of this works, then you likely have a bad left earbud.

Edit: I just checked firmware notes and most recent Bose update on Oct 30 2025 resolved some charging issues.

This has multi-point connection. I'm literally connected to my phone and computer with mine at the moment and it's showing in my Bose app. It also shows which source is supplying the current active audio stream. I have 6 devices paired to mine.

If you're using this with a Windows PC, then go disable 'Audio enhancements' in Sound/Properties for the earbuds. Then go disable the earbud microphone in Windows to stop it from randomly switching to hands-free mode which drastically lowers sound quality to provide bandwidth for the microphone audio input.

I have these.

I got them on the original SD Verizon deal over 3 years ago.

Then i got the SD for a refurb pair for I think it was $119 in December 2023 to give as a gift.

They came, the one earbud didn't work at all. Got on the phone with Bose and they weren't able to fix the issue despite resetting, making sure firmware was up-to-date, etc. At this point, Gen 2 had come out and they sent me a brand new pair of those as the replacements. (I think the ANC is the exact same, the Gen 2 added spatial and maybe multi-point?)

I imagine at this point if these didn't work for some reason you'd get the Ultra Gen 2 earbuds as your replacement.

Overall thoughts:

I love these headphones. I can't image the ANC of the Ultra Gen 2 earbuds is that much better (ie worth the extra cost) than these. Sound quality is good. I'm not an audiophile so I can't really comment about highs/lows/etc and all that crap. I use them for work calls and the mic and sound quality is clean and crisp. As with any bluetooth headphones, you do run into random connectivity issues.

If I needed another pair, I'd pick them up. The additional 1 year warranty is nice.

How are these for phone calls?
All earbuds have muffled voices, including this, unless you're in an absolutely noiseless environment. If you're looking to make calls via phone/Zoom/Webex, get the over-ear headphones for crisp voice quality.

No, cherish those OG QC buds while you have em. I accidentally put mine thru the wash and killed mine. The ultras do this thing all the time where it like, pops into mono for a second, is the best way I can describe it, then it goes back to normal. The older ones with the flat case were so, so much more reliable, and no real perceivable improvement in ANC or battery (or comfort, for that matter). If you don't have any ANC buds these are decent, but if you're coming from the OG's you'll be disappointed.
I have the QC and they pop into mono all the time. Have issues with connecting to bluetooth. They were pretty awful. I found a post that said to remove the bose app and that improved everything. I still ended up buying powerbeats pro 2. I found them to be more comfortable and havent had any issues. Biggest issue with them is the mic unfortunately.

gen 1 is kinda bad unless you baby them the little grill needs to be cleaned a lot and if you try ti remove the little rubber thing to clean the grill you can damage the buds, I did, snapped off the end of my bud and had to have Bose replace them.

6 hours battery life is a joke. I have the Sony xm5's, excellent sound quality with 8 hours. But they are slippery little suckers. I have and recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-CKS50TW2. 15 hours battery life and sound is excellent.
