The Singer Heavy Duty 8832 is essentially the Costco version of the popular 4432, offering the same core heavy-duty features (strong motor, metal frame, high speed, numerous stitches) but often bundled with exclusive accessories for Costco, making it a great value if found there, while the 4432 is the standard retail model, both excellent for tackling tough fabrics like denim and canvas with power and stability.

The singer heavy duty I have has trouble punching through three layers of jeans, so if I have to sew the seam crotch back together, it struggles.

For leather I am pretty sure you need a machine with a walking foot

You can usually buy a walking foot separately. I did for my Brother machine. I found that and a lot of other feet from third party brands on Amazon.

It's actually quite easy. Lots of videos on the web. What sucks is that finding fabric that you want is much more limited now that JoAnn's is out of business. You can buy fabric online, but usually you want to feel the fabric, especially if you are making apparel. That said, you can start with simple things like sewing napkins, etc. Learning basic hand stitches is important, too. Sometimes you will need to finish an item with a few hand stitches, like the ladder stitch, that cannot be done on a machine. It's not rocket science, lol. Hand sewing is especially useful for hemming pants and skirts, I find. And learning the proper way to sew a button on is very useful, too.

I got my wife the Singer Heavy Duty 64S for Christmas. She went to her first class today and the teacher expressed how bad these Singers are and how they are nothing like the Singers of the past.. She went through all of its short comings compared to better machines like the Brothers etc.. Quite bummed out to hear this and we may return it and get her another machine..

SInger is a shell of a company as far as its products go. Their machines are no longer the quality they were in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. Now Brother, Juki or Janome are the ones to go for. Singer relying on its reputation of the past to sucker people in these days

Yeah that's basically what my wife was told and what she relayed to me. We'll probably return it and find her something of better workmanship and function. Thanks for the reply.

People that have no experience with this machine like to hate on it for some reason. I've sewn several heavy-duty backpacks using it. The only time it has ever struggled is when I'm doing the shoulder straps. That involves 2 layers of heavy duty fabric, 5 mm foam and up to 2 layers of webbing. Jeans were mentioned by someone else. I had no issues with multiple layers of denim. My only real complaint about this machine is that the foot pedal isn't tuned well. Out of the box, it's very hard to have a slow, controlled speed. If you look online, the pedal can be opened up pretty easily and adjusted. That helps a lot but it's still not perfect. For this price, you won't find a machine that can handle thicker materials.

I've made all these things with it if you need more proof:

I haven't sewn leather but I did sew some suede using it. I was able to complete the project by limiting the seams to 2 layers. I was successful in the end but it was a struggle. Probably best to go with an industrial machine (Sailrite, Juki) for that application. However, those are going to be $1,000+.

Thank you for the extra details and susuggestions. Much appreciated.

These have generally bad reviews, especially if you expect "heavy duty" to be heavy duty and more reliable. Refurbs come up on Woot pretty regularly.
