For pacing maybe the theatrical cut might be a good consideration for first time viewers. But for a repeat viewings extended is king despite the downsides.

It depends what you want. The extended is more complete, but the extra scenes slow it down, and only a couple of them add much to the story. I never want to watch the extended Fellowship of the Ring again - it feels like it has extra filler. Also the extended trilogy blu-ray is $80+
Theatrical pacing is more fun and easier to watch/rewatch.
