Is 1 not released? I haven't ever played any of them, so would be tempted to play the original first.

Re1 came out on PS1, then had a remake on GameCube. It hasn't been remade since, so it's not up to the level of the other REmakes. Don't forget there is a RE0 as well (also originally GameCube)
