About this Book:
  • You know what's worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what's worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That's what.
  • Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that's actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain't your ordinary game show.

I had never heard of this before, but it sounds exactly the kind of bonkers crazy I like.

The book is phenomenal but do yourself a favor and listen to the audio book too. Jeff Hayes does such a wonderful job narrating the book.

I'm glad people like the series but it just didn't do anything for me and I had no desire to continue after book one.
I'm going to add another opinion here that's not glowing about these books. I listened to the audiobook of the first one. While it's engaging, it wasn't for me due to the content.

I like the idea and much about it but it basically mirrors 4chan, old-school Reddit, and toxic Twitch chats. Imagine someone who has better writing skills but the mindset of an anonymous 13 year old boy posting "edgy" things online or in game chat. That was part of the point (spoiler: an AI is involved and would have been trained on internet material) of the author, at least I'll be generous and give him credit for doing that, but some of us would rather not have to read/listen to 'social media' in a book.
Again, the writing is enjoyable and I don't fault people for liking it, but it's too much 'social media' content for me.

While I'd recommend it either way, the audiobooks are great. The overall voices are well defined, voice acting is great, and Carl kind of reminds me of a cross between Patrick Warburton and Brian Regan.

I really kind of hated it at first. Probably about 1/3 of the way in is when the author finally stated to feel like they were getting comfortable with their own story. Ultimately really liked it though

Did it go up in price? I'm seeing $22. I'll probably ly get it anyway cause it sounds cool, but if I can get a discount, all the better.

Jeff Hayes is incredible. I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and he is easily the best I've ever heard.
