They've been around for at least 400 years (it's actually called a butter bell). Fat and water don't mix, so the water doesn't affect the butter. It keeps the air out so the butter doesn't get contaminated, and it works very well.

I used to work in a professional kitchen and our sauciers used to use larger versions of these dishes all the time.

The name is somewhat misleading. Nowhere in the item listing does it describe as being made in France or of French materials. I guess the idea of the crock is potentially French in origin and therefore it's a "French Butter Crock?"

I have one and use it but it's a pain. When I refill it butter comes from the fridge cold so I have to leave the stick out for the day together it to squish inside the bell. Mine has a clear base and always looks oily. It's fine just not great.

Correct. Sweese products are designed in the US, but are made in China.

We have a butter bell, not this one specifically though. The water does help seal in freshness. When we used to keep the butter out and covered it would turn a little darker yellow over time. However with the butter bell and water in it the butter keeps "whiter" longer in color. Taste the same to be tho but it does look better over time.

French fries aren't made there either. Well, they weren't invited in france so that's a bad example.

French bread is French style bread but made locally. This is a French style butter dish.

I have to echo all of the other comments here hating on this thing. I tried it out but I"m back to my butter dish. My butter went bad faster in this thing and it was more awkward to use than a regular dish.

I think the intended use of these is to help keep butter fresher when stored at room temperature. Butter was created historically as a means of preserving a milk product before artificial cooling, after all; this just refines that method. If you are storing in the fridge, leave it in whatever form you wish.
