This HP Omen Max stands out as a high powered gaming laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti, Core Ultra 7 255HX, and a 140 watt GPU, and the configurable 64GB memory and Wi Fi 7 options make it more appealing as a desktop replacement. The stronger build and cooling are framed as a step above some competing gaming laptops, and the OLED upgrade is tempting if the price lands right. The main knocks are the 16 inch Full HD panel and the 512GB SSD, which feel undersized for the class. Deal pricing also proved unstable, with price changes and cancellations tied to a promotional error.

Common Questions (4)

  • Not reliably. Several orders were cancelled after HP said a promotional error occurred and they could not honor the original price, and some buyers received only partial refunds or had the laptop cancelled while the accessory still shipped. In some cases the final outcome was a cancelled laptop with the accessory kept.

  • Yes. The base 16" FHD+ IPS panel is widely criticized, while the configurable 16" WQXGA 2560x1600 IPS option adds 500 nits and 100% sRGB for $70, and the OLED option adds 240Hz with HDR 500 nits for $130. The higher-resolution panels are the practical upgrade if you want a sharper screen.

  • Yes. The configuration can be bumped to 64GB RAM for a negligible amount, and buyers also chose a 1TB SSD instead of the base 512GB drive. The 512GB SSD is considered too small for a 2026 gaming laptop, so the storage upgrade is the more practical choice.

  • Yes. The default Intel Wi‑Fi 6E AX211 can be upgraded to an Intel Wi‑Fi 7 BE200 card for $10 more. That makes the wireless upgrade one of the cheapest configurable add-ons.

Any opinions on this vs the MSI with the 5070ti that was posted up yesterday? The downfalls of the MSI being heavy with poor battery life aren't a big deal to me as it's a desktop replacement.

This HP is just a better quality laptop, even if you don't care about the battery and weight.

Thanks for that insight. My hang-up is, I'm reading that the Ryzen in the MSI is more powerful (it'll be plugged in at all times), but it only has 16gb of RAM. I can configure this one to have 64gb for a negligible amount, but it's got the Intel, which I'm reading is slower (although much more efficient). This would be a non-issue if RAM wasn't currently a bajillion dollars...

Does the CPU performance really matter to you that much?

When opening applications the SSD is the bottleneck. When running games the GPU is generally the bottleneck. When downloading files or browsing the web your Internet connection is the bottleneck. When you have multiple apps/browser tabs open at once the RAM size is the bottleneck. When you transcode video you'll likely be using the dedicated transcoding hardware on the iGPU or dGPU. When running local AI models the GPU VRAM is the bottleneck.

I'm not saying there aren't applications that will benefit from higher CPU performance (such as compressing large files), but for the typical person buying a gaming laptop, a slightly faster CPU will make no noticeable impact.

Actually, it looks like the Intel is generally faster for both single and multi threaded work. Even the Intel iGPU is faster than the one in the Ryzen.

You can configure this laptop's Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX211 (2x2) Bluetooth® 5.3 wireless card to an Intel® Wi-Fi 7 BE200 (2x2) Bluetooth® 5.4 wireless card for $10 more. Also you might want to select the 2X8GB option for RAM, it defaults to the 1X16GB. That OLED model is extremely tempting.
