The Surface Pro 7 is a compact Windows tablet that shines for basic everyday use, especially if you want a 3:2 2736 by 1824 display and easy add on keyboard or cover options. It can run Windows 11 and Linux, and the micro SD slot adds some flexibility for storage. The main drawbacks are the aging Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage, non replaceable SSD, and concerns about battery wear in refurb units. Its kickstand design, giant bezels, and tablet mode limitations make it feel more like a niche portable PC than a full laptop replacement.

  • people who want a Windows 11 tablet/laptop hybrid for basic tasks because one owner says their exact SP7 model has worked great on Win11 for the basics for about 3 years (after adding a Microsoft keyboard and microSD).

  • buyers who specifically need a 16:10 2736x1824 display for media or compatibility reasons because commenters note the resolution is unusual (out of left field) and that it's easy to find third-party keyboard/cover options on Amazon.

  • tinkerers who want to run Linux on a Surface Pro 7 because commenters say it can run Linux, pointing to the linux-surface project/custom kernel (with the caveat to check hardware quirks like camera support).

  • people planning to use it as a long-term Windows 11 machine in 2026 because multiple commenters call out 8GB RAM and 128GB storage as a deal-breaker and say you'll notice hiccups.

  • buyers who expect upgradeability or repairs because commenters say the SP7 lacks a replaceable SSD and that nothing inside is replaceable or serviceable.

  • people who want to use it like a true tablet or replace a laptop for travel because commenters say Windows doesn't run well in tablet form factor, it's awkward to hold/needs more tabletop space for the kickstand, and there's virtually no tablet-style Windows software.

  • buyers who care about performance headroom because commenters flag the i5-1035G4 as a weak CPU and say performance can be frustrating even when the screen resolution is great.

  • buyers who don't want to deal with missing accessories or wear because commenters note it doesn't even come with a keyboard and also dislike the "moderate signs of wear" refurb condition.

  • anyone who needs reliable battery life on the go because commenters warn that Surface Pro batteries aren't replaceable and that an older Surface Pro (SP6) can drop to about 30-60 minutes on battery, making battery health a key risk on used/refurb units.

It's 2026. I'd avoid this machine even if it was free.

This has 8gb of ram and 128gb SSD. Nothing inside the machine is replaceable or serviceable.

It doesn't even come with a KEYBOARD for cryin' out loud.

It's "refurb" -- aka heavily used. Released in 2019...so it's 6-7 years old. Hard no.

Unless you absolutely can't spend more than $200, I'd go with something else. Like the poster above said, this is 6-7 years old and used. It's basically like buying something from a Pawn Shop.

I have used Surface Pro's since the SP3. I have a SP6 that I used daily until I got a SP8 about three years ago, but I occasionally take the old SP6 on a trip where I don't want to worry about the laptop being abused or lost, including a New Year's trip just last week. The SP6 at this point will only last about 30-60 minutes on battery, so I mostly have to use it while it's plugged in.

So I wonder about how much battery life is left in these SP7 units, given they are pretty much just used, not really refurbished, and battery not replaceable.

Pawnshop with a year warranty and you know it works and (at least) has an 80% battery capacity. Oh, and not stolen either.

But just like a pawnshop...LOL.

You'll probably be very frustrated woth performance and toss this aside. I have an older Asus one with amazing resolution but horrible performance. Then we got a much more expensive surface pro, and very similar problem a bit better performance but still bloated. Can these run Linux?
"Older asus one"

Asus doesn't make surface, microsoft does.

Windows tablet. Windows just doesn't run well on tablet format. I thought it was because of brand, we got surface pro, it cant replace laptop both form and function.

That's why you buy the keyboard case which makes it a full blown laptop...

A laptop that cannot be used on a lap (not easily at least -- nor can it be held with one hand -- so you're not using this on the go.

It requires around 50% more tabletop space since it requires the kickstand -- so you're NOT using this on tiny airline tables or lecture hall chairs that make even the most ultra-compact 13" laptops squirm for space.

It's too large and heavy and awkward to hold "just as a tablet", plus there's virtually NO tablet-style software for Windows that's close to being on-par or superior to the keyboard+mouse version.

So what's the use case again for this?

Actually, I have owned and used several -- Surface Pro 2 personally, and MANY models we've "supported" through the workplace. Though "supported" is a very loose term, since if ANYTHING broke on them (and whoo boy daddy they were delicate little snowflakes that ran hot), all you could do was get ahold of dear ol' Uncle Gates and beg him to fix them.

They're not a good machine. There have been moderate improvements each successive generation, but they're generally really overpriced. The nicest thing about them is they championed the 3:2 aspect ratio when most laptop manufacturers were dragging their feet getting to 16:10. Not that it did much good overall.

But the biggest complaint from our users was "what's the ACTUAL use case for this? there are virtually NO tablet applications for Windows. it's horrible on a plane. you can't carry it around open from meeting to meeting like a normal laptop."

our field agents laughed at how much space they needed to set it up -- when they're working with holding it by one hand. And keyboard issues all the time.

Not one person who got the Surface Pro opted to get another as a replacement when they could swap out. and more than a few times, if a Surface Pro had issues needing a warranty repair, they asked if they could use this opportunity to swap out to ANYTHING ELSE than that bloody thing. If we had anything in our stock, we usually helped out with that. Surfaces were miserable machines.

I think the millions of individuals and business that owns surface devices tend to disagree.... outside of apple it's literally the most successful and popular line of computers ever made.

Performance? This thing should be fine for most tasks. But definitely make sure you have the startup apps turned down. Also, it is possible to install a clean OS?

But my daily driver until a few weeks ago was a i7 3rd gen. Anything after 8 gen will get Windows 11.

The 8GB of RAM is hard to swallow. I definately approve.

  1. This is a NORMAL price for the 7.
  2. Big businesses but a ton of Surfaces yearly, then dump older models, so this is why you can Always find a decent deal on a used Surface.
  3. This also means you can predict what'll be $200~ when.
    Ie. If 7 is $200~ this year, it's sp8 in 2027, sp9 in 2028, etc.
  4. Don't bother paying full price on a new Surface unless you don't mind the huge depreciation hit.
  5. Use Notebookcheck.net, pcworld.com, Passmark CPU ratings to gauge performance. Sell the old surface for the newer used one when performance difference is 2x+~ for the best use of money.
Eg. If you have a surface pro 6 with a geekbench of abour 800~, then the sp9 at 1400~ would be the next upgade to plan for.
  6. Generally works as an ultra light "desktop" laptop because the stupid kickstand design bites into the thighs after some time on a lap. Needs a piece of stiff cardboard under it while on a lap to sit well. And unlike a regular laptop, sitting at an angle ain't gonna work because the thing collapses awkwardly as you tilt the thighs.
  7. But in a college notebook size, not much else out there that's lighter/more compact. Half the weight of a Macbook Air and can emulate Mac OS (hackintosh), Android, and Linux, too. Runs classic game consoles up to about the PlayStation 1/2 level just fine.
  8. As an ebook reader, web browser in portrait mode works nicely YouTube / movies in landscape mode not as good because the dumb designers didn't use a standard 16:9 screen, so most everything's letterboxed and smaller. Speakers are decent for a tiny tablet - just barely rich enough to listen to during a movie if one doesn't have a bigger speaker hooked up.
  9. White Spots and random lcd lines are among the most common issues. Can't get around this - MicroShaft went cheap for generations and love that you have to keep buying new Surfaces. So buy cheap, expect the lcd failure (4x here across different generations), and buy cheap replacements.
  10. Would not worry about the internal storage. If important, backup files to cloud or local usb flash drives.
  11. As for useability?
Office, Photoshop, Edge, Handbrake, VCL - the basics, runs fine on a SP6 8GB 256GB for light work. Need 16GB+ for bigger graphics/video projects, but otherwise decent for the age (ie. No 4-core cpu is going to be snappy like the 10-core Surface Pro 10, using a more modern cpu.).
  12. A few others, hp, dell, lenovo, chuwi, make pc tablets, which also sell cheap used. Use reviews to see what suits you.
  13. For anime/graphic/artists, nothing else can run all the pro level software from Photoshop to Illustator to Painter and more with a nice pen. Same for music - search "surface music production" in YouTube for that one guy that has extensively used surfaces for this.
  14. Just don't buy the Black keyboard. Its surface coating frays much faster - see ebay for examples of the crappy look used one develop.

Good post... most worried about the screen issues.
