I am a certified GI nurse and reprocess endoscopes on a daily basis. Bioburden is our enemy, biofilm is our worst enemy, very, difficult to eradicate. My responsibility is to remove bioburden so biofilm does not form. The first course you take related to endoscope processing has you looking at your kitchen and bathroom cleaning regimen in a whole new light. "formulated with a USDA Certified 80% Biobased formula that breaks down tough grease and grime. Powered by probiotic technology, it keeps working after you wipe, continuing to break down future messes and helping prevent buildup of grease & grime for up to 72 hours on hard surfaces*

Sorry if my original remark gotten taken out of context. Scopes are cleaned very well and are far more sanitary than your toothbrush. The risk of developing an infection from an endoscopy is pretty close to zero. There are other true risks (anesthesia, missed lesions, bleeding, tear in intestine, etc) but infection is at the bottom. The hoopla about infection risk ~10-12 years ago had to do with special endoscopes (duodenoscopes) that aren't used for routine endoscopy/colonoscopy. Those scopes were subsequently redesigned and also have a disposable endcap.

The point of my comment was that simple soap (Dawn) will likely work better than this cleaner.

No, they contain sensitive electronics and can't be autoclaved.

Not sure you will have any luck with your search. There are some disposable duodenoscopes but they are rarely used. Again the infection risk of endoscopy is exceedingly low. You are at a greater risk by having a substandard procedure done, which is what could happen if someone has to use a crappy disposable scope -- they will be less diligent about looking behind folds since the device is less maneuverable and responsive and they still need to finish your procedure in X minutes. As an aside, make sure to get your colonoscopies -- colon cancer is extremely preventable by removing precursor lesions, and rates are on the rise, especially amongst the younger population. Stool tests are better than nothing but are inferior to colonoscopy (not very good for detecting advanced pre-cancerous lesions before they become cancer).

Enzymatic cleaners work for the vast majority of cases, but there are some substances they fail at. Most reprocessing areas carry a bottle of Dawn. Here is an example of when Olympus recommended using it: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/sc...:text=Dawn

A standard upper gastroscope (used during an EGD) is also used during flexible sigmoidoscopies. If a push enteroscopy is performed (EGD with scope advanced to the beginning of the jejunum rather than stopping in the 2nd portion of the duodenum), commonly a slim colonoscope is used through the mouth.

I'm just a simpleton, can someone explain to me the benefit of a surface cleaner being, of all things, probiotic?

I don't know if you are monitoring comments - @czad40 gave a fantastic overview as a top level comment after you asked. Might not trigger an alert for you since it wasn't a direct reply.

Biofilms can be removed with baby soap.

Or maybe you can drink this if your gut bacteria needs a boost?

Bring a "bio based" cleaner has little to do with how effective it is against bio films. I would also say that if your counter tops have been left dirty and wet long enough to have already developed a "bio film", one may wish to reevaluate how often one cleans.

At times I perform absolutely filthy colonoscopies. Unprepped or minimally prepped, bed bound, neurogenic bowel, floppy/redundant with no motility. One time they reprocessed a scope 8 times and it still stunk. When we called Olympus, they told us to soak it in Dawn. Since then, I only use Dawn at home-- not just for dishes but also general cleaning (esp since having kids and trying to minimize other chemicals). Dawn used to be used more frequently when olestra was popular (since it caused a bunch of undigested fat to be in the stool).

Probiotics cleaners sound like a scam. If something is gentle enough to not kill the "good" bacteria in it, it is too gentle to effectively clean and kill the bad bacteria in your environment.

Are scopes autoclaved?

Which is why I will request a one time use disposable one to avoid that risk altogether. Google told me the newer versions are improved, but I'm not sure if my insurance will cover disposable ones or not.

I would find a provider that only uses disposable. Gross...
