I prefer to have my info on my PC not on some cloud server somewhere where it could be hacked and/or sold. Peace of mind is worth it to me.

Amazon No Rush credits. ...for Amazon, I can get it a little bit cheaper, about $22.
Interesting - I don't get a lot of offers for no rush anymore - but I also thought people were saying years ago that they stopped allowing them to be used for software like this. Have they changed back?

As a side note, there is no income limit on the Free fillable Forms on the IRS website - but it's not available until January 26th.

FreeTax doesn't import and prepare schedule D automatically from your brokerage, I think that's the deal killer for many people. Also they charge $16 for each state tax filing (e-file) but with H&R Block you can print it out and mail it in for free, so for a person doing 2 or more filings, that alone makes H&R Block the lower cost option. But direct connect to brokerage account is the most important factor.
Thank you for providing an informative and concise answer. That makes perfect sense to me. I appreciate you taking the time.

Is that to say that H&RBlock is primarily useful for day-traders?

I often use the Fillable Forms feature on the IRS website, but I'm tempted to get software this year just to step through a couple things I haven't done in several years.. but I'm not really sure it would save me any time. I certainly don't have enough taxable investment transactions to worry about that aspect. I do wish it included state E-File - that would actually save some time over having to retype it all into the state system.

Question: Just trying to confirm. Can I share this between 5 people to create and file 5 federal tax returns? From the internet search, it seems it does allow it (just like TurboT). I am trying to move away from TT and to cheaper H&R.

Windows reviewers say it only works on Windows 10 or 11 and even that is tricky

The H&R Block software also includes one free consultation (by online chat or phone call, though they may have dropped the phone option over the years). That's saved me a boatload of money twice when I had some really unusual circumstances. Without it, I would've had to pay a CPA for a consultation, if not have them do my taxes those years.

I used Freetaxusa last year just to see how it was. It didn't seem as airtight as H&R Block's software. The process didn't vet my circumstances as thoroughly, nor guide me through specific steps. e.g. it asked me how I wanted to deduct my home office, but didn't offer any assistance in calculating my deduction when I said I wanted to go by the sqft of the office. I had to pull the numbers from the previous year when I'd filed with H&R Block. And it completely missed a couple deductions. I caught them when I compared against my previous year's return to see what the differences were, and I had to figure out a way to include them manually.

If your taxes are simpler (e.g. standard deduction), I can see the attraction. But if you're itemizing and/or have a schedule C, I think the peace of mind is worth the extra $25 or so.

You can create and file hundreds of federal tax returns, but you're limited to 5 digital files for free. If you have a printer, you can file for the price of a stamp, envelope, and a few pieces of paper.
