I'm trying to add some Milwaukee tools slowly as a gift for someone who mostly uses Dewalt but really wants Milwaukee. They, as you know, are way expensive, but I saw a few things that caught my eye at Rural King. Just looking for advice here, I'm a chik so I don't know a lot about tools. One was a 50 piece 1/4" drive ratchet and socket set for $94.99. Good price? I love the fact it was both SAE AND metric but was concerned about the 1/4" drive as compared to the 3/8" drive which was a 56 piece set for $200. Big jump in price? Is the 1/4" vs. the 3/8" a huge deal or is it a socket you could purchase separatley, along w/ a Mil ratchet? Lastly they had some cool Milwallkee's Red Helix drill bits which are made from M35 Cobalt blend, which lasts longer I believe better chip ejection, and also impacts heat. Dewalt's bits also black and gold made from Cobalt, titanium, you get the drill (I cannot believe I just said that), anyway, I know the two can be interchangeable as long as the set end is the same shape, but of course a Milwalkee drill with those or other bits from M would probably be ideal? They bits was a 15 piece set, 48-49-2970 for $40. I did take note that Milwaukee Titanium Nitride Shockwave Red Helix Drill Bit Kit, 23-Piece Set - 48-89-4631, which I know is different, but 56 reviews not even two stars. Advice? Hope to hear sime feedback!

Same set at Home Depot for $99.00. On clearance at my zip code, 97303, for $89.00. Just in case anyone prefers Home Depot. It's the same set. Milwaukee 49-66-7012.

I'm 51 and have a big beard, so, when I walk in a hardware store, I am SUPPOSED to know what I'm doing, but I don't. I kind of entered this tool world at 47 when, on the advice of a friend, I bought my first Milwaukee circular saw, an M18. Prior to that, I didn't really know anything at all. I'm currently stuck at knowing 3 things. But I forgot 2 of them. Anyway, I vividly recall having all the same questions that you are asking about ratchets and drill bits and power tools and wrenches and drill bits again and saw blades and oh my it's overwhelming!!! So, I'll give my .02 cents. And my advice is worth almost half that.
1/4" or 3/8" or 1/2"? - 1/4" will get A LOT done. 3/8" will really handle almost everything. 1/2" will definitely handle virtually everything but might be overkill in some areas. So, that's why 3/8" tends to be the most popular size.
As for Drill Bits, and I'm not being sarcastic, they are an entire UNIVERSE in and of themselves. Drill Bits get very specialized, very quickly, just with wood. Then, once you step out of wood and start drilling concrete or metal or tile or anything else they just go bananas. So, it's VERY HARD to even give a vague recommendation regarding drill bits.
I don't know if any of that is helpful. I offer it as feedback and only that. I will say, over the last 4-5 years, I've spent quite a bit of money on Milwaukee tools and never regretted it. It's a learning process and I've made mistakes, of course. But, the nice thing is, if I make a mistake on a Milwaukee purchase and don't even realize it until a year later, I can get at least 1/2 my money back selling it on Marketplace. Then, I learn my lesson and move on to the next mistake. Anyway, best of luck!
