I watched a kid in carpentry class in high school cut his thumb to the bone with one of these, just shaved a big chunk right off it. 30 years later i can still see his face and hear him calmly saying "god damit" over and over.

Manufacturers are in a pickle: make it hard enough to hold a real edge, and people will complain it cracks when they drop it!

I've been pleasantly surprised by the edge retention on Buck Brothers "Professional" [homedepot.com] chisels. I still keep a few of theirs around, like their 2" model.

Narex seems to be most people's suggestion for budget-friendly higher-end chisels. They have a few different lines at different price points. I tend to buy them when I don't want to spend much on a chisel I only need for a specific purpose.

On a side note, keep in mind that you should only hit a wood handled chisel with a wood or rubber mallet, not a metal hammer. The Buck Brothers chisels have plastic handles with a metal strike cap that you can wail on.

But the edge on soft ones also fold over and squish like butter if you drop them. Either way, you have a lot of grinding ahead of you.

No matter what brand you buy, you are going to have to learn how to sharpen your chisels (or know a local knife sharpener nearby).

Bought this a while ago, can't remember the price but I can say for sure the build quality is decent for a regular carpentry/woodworking. It's not high end but I'd say it's above average. Heck, I haven't even sharpened them yet but I probably should.
