Snagged this back in October. It's a pretty nice portable gaming rig. Beats lugging the Alienware 16" around...it's power brick is as heavy as this ROG laptop is.

Bought an openbox from their outlet store in the mall with store pickup back on 9/22. Clerk told me he just boxed up their display model that same day I ordered it. It was good condition but looked brand new and included all the accessories and box. Paid $1,453.99 plus tax.
Super light and compact. Build quality felt great. Needed a laptop with a dedicated gpu for travel and this fits the bill. Screen was gorgeous and bright. Really good battery life.

Agreed. I had a G14 2 revisions ago with the 4060. Great price for what you get (and don't get -added weight and size). G-Helper is super underrated and a great replacement for that Armoury Crate crap.

Gaming is all about a compromise somewhere and somehow. Would I love to have all the toys? Yes, but in my situation, just wasn't practical (financially). For PC gaming I've gone through a lot of variations:
1) dedicated mid tower with a 3080ti. Still have it and use occasionally.
2) thin and light portable Laptop running moonlight/apollo to the desktop. I could do couch computing comfortably and still game I thought.
3) same thin laptop hooked up to an external TB3 with a 3070. I just wasn't happy with streaming for the latency sensitive games. After using an eGPU I felt I wanted to not be tied down to a desk. If I didn't already have a desktop.. perhaps it made sense. I ended up selling both laptop and eGPU
4) rog g14 with discrete 4060. Was a lot of fun doing family trips and gaming when everyone went to sleep. I was no longer tied to just gaming while docked. G14 Performed great with a gaming mouse. Ended up selling. Couldn't have both gaming PC and Laptop.
5) steamdeck. Great to have portable steam library. I've got endless of hours to complete. Ended up returning due to the low performance and the constant tweaking men to run certain games.
6) rog ally x. Bought used, windows was severely underwhelming and disappointing. Armory crate sucked even more than on the G14. Also tried moonlight/apollo to the desktop. I don't want to deal with windows patches and os updates when I game. (Maybe gaming with windows on handhelds is better now? Haven't tried since Xbox handheld released).
7) rog ally x running steamOS. Luckily, this was mature enough when I got the AllyX. This is what I've settled on. It was pretty straightforward to install steamos. This is my main gaming device now. Earbuds, discord, steam/gog/epic/retro gams.
Honestly, now that I have kids, the rog ally x is the only way I can get gaming done. If I have time, I still would rather game on my desktop.. but my gaming time is 1:4 ratio desktop:handheld.

Last year I got the non-OLED, 4060 version of this open box+clearance sale for just $500. MSRP was like $1500 or something. One of the best impulse purchases of my life. It runs 90-95% of the games I want to play, and it's portable enough to grab and go anywhere with. I'm not sure the maxed-out version is really worth the extra 3x in cost, considering how quickly tech goes obsolete. Maybe look and see if you can find the economy version, because it really is good enough for most people - especially if it isn't your primary gaming rig.

Same, don't see myself buying a gaming laptop again after using them since 2016, I either sit at a desktop with my monitor and keyboard plugged in or play on my handheld, desktop + handheld is the move for gaming and desktop + cheap portable laptop with good battery life is the move for productivity. These are good if on sale and you just want an all in one that you intend to use on the go. Still pretty nice for college students buying one device that moves around alot.

No, they just need the vapor chamber and decided not to put it into the 14" body.

Is this model still a portable oven or have they figured out the heat issues since the 4060 gen?

Make sure you get G-Helper. It make a world of different. If you can, definitely get rid of the liquid metal they put in. I use Kyrosheet and CPU was 10c cooler on battery.

It depends on your use case. If you're on the go a lot and need some light graphics power then I'll say the 2025 version is better. The Panther Lake one only features 4 Xe cores so you'll likely need to engage the power hungry 5070ti all the time except for light internet browsing. The old HX 370 chips get quite a lot better integrated graphic performance for light photo editing and some encoding. You can go a long way with the 2025 version in such use case.
Instead, if you focus on sole CPU power and do not travel with the laptop a lot, or you always have a power plug, or you will turn on 5070ti anyway for gaming/heavy editing, then the Panther Lake version will have an edge. It'll be more expensive though, and you may not see the same level of discount as the 2025 version does due to the recent memory/ssd price hike.

Vapor chamber doesn't defeat physics. It can reduce the delta-T between the silicon surface to the heat sink by 2-5 degC comparing to the current liquid metal solution. With that, you may be able to push 3-8% more wattage, but that's about it. The surface area of the heat sink dictates how much heat can be dissipated in a sustaining condition - that's what gaming is like. You need to add more surface area to the heat sink to carry more thermal, hence more metal and more weight. There is a physical limit what a 1.45kg chassis can do.
