The 26TB Seagate Expansion Desktop is drawing attention as a cheap source of large-capacity storage, especially for shucking into NAS builds or using as cold backup space. The enclosure has been getting real-world transfer reports around 240 to 250 MB per second over USB 3, and some setups run Plex or media storage fine when the drive is not the bottleneck. The main cautions are noise, heat, and uncertainty about what drive is inside, with reports of Barracuda or HAMR based units and warnings that it is not rated for 24/7 NAS use. The micro USB B connector and awkward shucking process also stand out. A practical pick for bulk storage if you can live with the quirks.

I've had far better luck with Seagate over the years than I ever had with Western Digital.

And now that WD is engaging in misleading advertising, I doubt I will ever give them another go until they change their ways.

Is this good for a Plex server? I'm reaching my 4TB SSD limit, and tbh, I use LGTV to watch plex and the platform is so slow I don't think the SSD helped much, so I'm considering the switch.

been using 3 of these for the past 10 years. an 8TB, 10TB, and a 12TB. not a single problem. the trick is to shake it while it's copying files and knocking it over.

Seagate SUCKS!!!

When you do get in contact with them they will just respond with pre-canned messages. Do not have phone support and no way to escalate via chat. They intentionally go out of their way to not offer any reasonable support for their online store.

Last I purchased a drive from them they cancelled my order and jacked up the price.

Yep, that's why I bought mine back in June and at that time, it was $250 though B&H. I do remember Seagate was selling it for around $290 at the time which made me side w/ B&H.
Yep!

There was a period I was buying them off SPD instead of shucking, but their prices have INCREASED vs 3-4 years ago for the same size, and external HDDs have come down.

Remember when 1GB was massive amount of storage?
It was a whole one thousand megabytes!
Yeah, but my parents only let me install one game at a time and we didn't do back-ups. Now I want to back-up 20+ years of digital photography, classic sports games, old TV/movies, audiobooks, old games, old software, etc. in multiple places.

Anyhow, I need these drives under $200 because I need a couple. They need to replace my 8TB and 10TB drives that were $150 six years ago.

Good deal! Does anyone know what is inside (or the nearest Barracuda) equivalent?
