So you have one motor and you can use it with many tools, trimmer, edger, polesaw, etc.
Without that you have an entire tool for each job.
I can image expand-it (and similar style for other brands) being slightly heavier (due to hardware to attach to pieces together) and slightly more maintenance (same thing, just another point of failure. I have been using this style for a long time and never had any issues. It's slightly cheaper because you have one motor for several tools and take up less space for the same reason. Only annoyance changing from trimmer to edger in the middle of lawn work, but it only take 1-2 mins to do that.
