This Tapo 2K wireless doorbell camera stands out for solid video and audio at a very low price, with local SD card recording and no yearly subscription. It can be powered by battery, wired, or even kept topped up with a USB C solar panel, and it works with the Tapo app and H500 hub. The main tradeoffs are uneven motion and person alerts, missing image previews in notifications, and no clear 24/7 recording support on the battery model. A compact option if you want affordable local recording and can live with some alert quirks.

Common Questions (5)

  • Battery life varies with activity, but reported use ranges from about 25% remaining after 4 months to roughly 70% after 2 months of a couple recordings per day. A wired setup avoids battery charging, and a solar panel can keep it topped up.

  • It can support 24/7 recording when powered from a wired source, and it may also work with a solar charger. The battery-powered setup does not offer nonstop recording, so continuous recording depends on using external power.

  • Storage depends on card size, resolution, and whether you record motion only or continuously. Examples reported include about 4.5 days on a 64GB card at 2K continuous recording, about 15 days on a 128GB card at 1080p continuous recording, and about 5 months on a 128GB card with motion-only recording.

  • No yearly subscription is needed; recordings can be saved to a microSD card in the camera. That makes it a lower-cost alternative to subscription-based doorbells like Ring.

  • Yes, it comes with an indoor chime unit that plugs in inside the house. It does not use your existing doorbell chime wiring, and if Wi‑Fi goes down the chime will not work.

I have this. Installed 4 months ago, battery is at 25% now. Picks up footages without any problems, and very responsive. I don't think you could anything better at $35.

I got this for 35 a few months back. I used it to replace my Ring 3 door bell due to a few reasons. 1) The dumb yearly subscription. 2) The front plastic cover for the lens de laminated which is common. 3) The video quality is bad and the audio was choppy and sometimes the people couldn't hear or understand me. This might have been due to the wifi signal not being strong enough. 4) Many times it would completely miss motion and not send a notification 5) There were some controversial decisions made about police being able to access the video captured by Ring cameras.

Here's the good and bad of the Tapo:

1) Way better quality in video and people hear me clearly now.
2) No yearly subscription, all recordings to a SD card in the camera.
3) Has the similar features and Tapo or TP-Link has good support.
4) It had to compatible with a solar panel and I was able to test it working with a USB C solar panel so I don't have to manually charge it. It's at 100% all the time.

Bad:
1) The notifications don't show an Image of who or what triggered the motion/doorbell.

So far no regrets switching. I also have Tapo security cameras so everything is one app now which is nice.

Did you have a chime with your ring, and did you get one with your tapo - I have a ring one and am curious if I can live without it if I get the tapo?

does yours actually show 100% since it's wired. my wired one was 100%, but now down to 92% after about 8 months. weird that it goes down when it's wired and it's showing wired continuously on.

Your wired is most likely connected to a battery internal that has degraded overtime like a iPhones battery health degrades.

How is this a slick deal when it appears to be the regular price?

Great price, but no 24/7 recording option because it's battery powered. For me, definitely worth the higher price for that nonstop recording feature.
