This Tapo 2K wireless doorbell camera stands out for solid video and audio at a very low price, with local SD card recording and no yearly subscription. It can be powered by battery, wired, or even kept topped up with a USB C solar panel, and it works with the Tapo app and H500 hub. The main tradeoffs are uneven motion and person alerts, missing image previews in notifications, and no clear 24/7 recording support on the battery model. A compact option if you want affordable local recording and can live with some alert quirks.

  • The camera can record to an SD card without a yearly subscription requirement.

  • The system can support continuous charging with a USB-C solar panel setup.

  • The doorbell can capture responsive motion and clear footage after months of use.

  • The doorbell can be compatible with the Tapo H500 hub for a broader Tapo setup.

  • Notifications can fail to show who triggered motion and can also miss doorbell ring alerts.

  • Battery levels can drop even when the unit is described as wired continuously.

  • Motion detection can mislabel vehicles as people and can miss activity at night.

  • If Wi‑Fi is lost, the indoor chime can stop working.

I have a different version. I would pick it over ring or any other name brand. It works well, has an SD card to not require a subscription plan. Sometimes the app doesn't notify me of a doorbell ring but for me its not the end of the world. Recording events which is my biggest reason for getting it works with no issues. I probably charge it every month or two and have people going in and out all day triggering it

Great price, but no 24/7 recording option because it's battery powered. For me, definitely worth the higher price for that nonstop recording feature.
you can set the detecion range wider for it to trigger earlier to record. Honestly, at 24/7 recording youll end up losing data so quickly

In case it's a useful reference, I have the wired Kasa Doorbell Camera (also owned by TP-Link) with a 128GB microSD card, and with continuous recording at 1080p, I usually have about a rolling 15 days worth of recordings at any given time.

I got this for 35 a few months back. I used it to replace my Ring 3 door bell due to a few reasons. 1) The dumb yearly subscription. 2) The front plastic cover for the lens de laminated which is common. 3) The video quality is bad and the audio was choppy and sometimes the people couldn't hear or understand me. This might have been due to the wifi signal not being strong enough. 4) Many times it would completely miss motion and not send a notification 5) There were some controversial decisions made about police being able to access the video captured by Ring cameras. Here's the good and bad of the Tapo:1) Way better quality in video and people hear me clearly now.2) No yearly subscription, all recordings to a SD card in the camera.3) Has the similar features and Tapo or TP-Link has good support.4) It had to compatible with a solar panel and I was able to test it working with a USB C solar panel so I don't have to manually charge it. It's at 100% all the time.Bad:1) The notifications don't show an Image of who or what triggered the motion/doorbell.So far no regrets switching. I also have Tapo security cameras so everything is one app now which is nice.
This ^ the notification for motion detection always say person detected even if it was just vehicles. The motion detection is mostly a miss and is mostly dormant even in the night when deers came by in front of the view. It starts to becoming more sensitive when the app is opened, sending me 2-3 alerts in succession even for slightest wind breeze causing leaves to move a bit.

Shows that it was on sale for $29 in November? Just wondering if this is the best price for now since I'd like to BUY LIKE 5 OF THESE....
I tried getting that price in November, and it was limited to 1 per account. I haven't seen it dip that low since.
Someone else mentioned Best Buy is same price. Maybe you could get discounted Best Buy gift cards at Target or reward points at Kroger to make it worth while. GL!

FWIW, I believe it supports 24/7 recording when plugged into power source, perhaps even a solar charger.

Yes, it's buried in the app though in tapo app you'll click your profile pic/avatar in top left and under services you'll see "Third-Party Services" and you can enable it under there.

Unrelated but got one of these to use in my back patio instead of a regular camera and works great, I have it plugged into a small solar panel and it continuously charges. I just used a 90 degree cable so it wouldn't hang below the doorbell.

Really happy with Tapo and able to keep my footage private.

I picked this up during BF. Two months of a couple recordings a day, and battery is down to 70%.
My use case is a perimeter camera: I have it mounted on the fence covering a couple of gates and the side door to the house. North-facing so it doesn't get direct sunlight; but will experience rain/moisture with little protection. TX winter has been very mild so far, so cannot vouch for weather resistance yet. Although first week it fogged up, but so did my 1-year old Tapo solar cam. Flawless since.

As another reference - also 128gb with motion recording only mine has 5 months of recording. It can all depend on SD card size and video quality

It doesn't use your chime but it does come with a chime to plug in somewhere inside.

Anyone used amazon echo show as a chime? How was it?
would not recommend as if you lose your wifi, your chime is gone.

Since you didn't say my feeling is you didn't change the "sensitivity to motion" in the app?

Will this record to the Tapo H200 or H500 hub?
