The TX RZ50 stands out as a feature rich 9.2 channel AVR with Dirac Live included and enough power for a solid out of the box home theater setup. It is often framed as a strong value versus Denon and Marantz, especially if you do not need 11 channels or plan to add expensive room correction upgrades later. The main cautions are its older five year platform, reported low impedance and support concerns, and the fact that ART would still require extra hardware and about $600 in add ons. It remains a capable pick if you want Dirac now and do not need the newest upgrade path.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. At $900 with free shipping, it is still a solid out-of-the-box deal for what it can do, especially if you want Dirac Live included and a strong feature set without paying for higher-end models. A prior $750 sale and a $599 pre-tariff purchase show it has been cheaper before, but this price is still considered reasonable for the current market.

  • The TX-RZ50 includes the base Dirac Live license, but it does not have a path to Dirac ART. ART is expected to require additional purchases such as Bass Control and ART, which can add roughly $600, so it only makes sense if you already have the rest of the setup in place.

  • Its rated 120 W/ch is measured with 2 channels driven, so the real-world output is less impressive once all surround channels are in play. For average home listening levels, it can still be hard to tell apart from similar receivers when properly set up, though low-impedance speakers and larger rooms may benefit from more headroom.

  • There are reports of historical reliability concerns with Onkyo in-house AVRs, and the TX-RZ50 is also described as less ideal for low-impedance speakers. That said, it is still viewed as a strong feature-per-dollar receiver if those tradeoffs do not matter for your setup.

  • Probably not if your external amps already cover the channels you need. The RZ50 does not have a true preamp mode, so its internal amplification still draws power, while the step up to an RZ70 may be unnecessary if you already own dedicated amplification.

120 W/Ch (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 channels driven) is the true power rating. Really not all that impressive once you divide that up into the surround channels. I have the Onkyo TX-NR7100, it's decent at 100 W/Ch, but really for a decent sized room 160 W/Ch is more of a comfortable power rating to AV surround, so you're not pushing the amp to its limits. My speakers are pretty power efficient also just to add. The power isn't as much for the overall volume as it is for the ability to push dynamic levels without sounding stressed. The Onkyo does great surround separation and presence though, I have to admit that. I do wish that the display would default to showing the surround mode instead of the input.
I would add that this often gets overblown.

A key thing you brought up, IF you're pushing the amp to its limits.
At average levels in a home setup, the majority don't really get there.

An example would be this vs the 7100.
Properly implemented, at average levels, good luck telling them apart ime.

Adorama, make sure you pay the extra for shipping insurance. They ship in manufacture box that is a billboard for whats inside. If the box shows up empty you are out of luck. I also received a refurb on the rz30 as I mentioned in another thread. Broken WiFi antenna and hdmi issues and volume control issues sending the receiver into crazy mode. They told me to contact manufacturer on troubleshooting before return. Problem is I already filed for a return online and sent it back before I could get a reply about my problem. It's been a week and havent heard anything back as of yet. Kind of an iffy supplier if you ask me. They sell a lot of refurbs and for me should be a red flag from now on also.

I'm gonna use this as a preamp and run better external amplification. Should I spring for the RZ70 or is that a waste?

Depends how much you're willing to spend on external amplification. Street pricing difference b/w the RZ50 and RZ70 is about $600-$700.
If you can spend $600-$700 worth of external amplification, that will be better than the increase to the RZ70. Amp power from mass market AVRs are typically not as powerful as dedicated external amps.

Check out accessories 4 less. I just had to deal with them and there CS is pretty great. Too bad they don't sell the brands of speakers I'm looking at since I have no problem dealing with them again.

If you have the external amps already, yes the RZ70 is kinda a waste.

Keep in mind the RZ50 doesn't offer pre amp mode so internals will continue to draw power.

The RZ70 does for all channels but then you're paying twice for power.

The new RZ31,RZ51 & RZ71 will come out at the end of this year or early 2027.
Nothing known about what they will offer at this point.
MSRP will likely be much higher though.
