We've been through this before...

The issue is usually that people have no idea what Fill Power actually means. Fill Power is a measure of the quality of the down insulation. It's literally just the number of a cubic inches that one ounce of down takes up... it's a measure of 'fluffiness'... which translates into insulating power... which translates into quality.

However, it's not a measure of how warm a jacket is. To know that (in addition to how it's distributed, etc), you need to know both the quality (Fill Power) and the quantity (Fill Weight) of the garment.

So... an 850 Fill Power jacket can have less down in it than a 550 Fill Power jacket and still provide the same warmth... will less bulk.

In addition, jackets like this are made to be mid-layers and not outer layers. The thin nylon fabric is designed to reduce bulk when worn under a shell layer. They're not terribly rip or abrasion resistant... and aren't designed to be. This would be a nice mid-layer... or an 'around town' mid-weight jacket, but it's not the right call for a wet day in the woods or tramping thru brush.

EB CirrusLite [eddiebauer.com] - This is the 'standard' EB 650 Fill Power jacket... reasonably priced, reasonably warm.

LLBean Ultrilight 850 [llbean.com] - If you can find this one on sale (I got it for under $60 before CB), it's great value for the money. 850FP and good fill weight (probably twice the fill weight of the Eddie Bauer). Very warm (and might be too warm, in certain circumstances).

Other solid options out there for more technical gear (I own Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia down as well)... can be a bargain if you find them on-sale. Particularly like MH StretchDown.

To expand on this the majority of the one star reviews seem to echo this sentiment like the following:

---------------

Submitted 1 month agoBy RobFrom NE, PennsylvaniaTerrible jacket. Terrible fit. Terrible quality. The sides are spandex so there's zero insulation there. And there's No way this jacket is a 550 down fill. Whoever designed this jacket should be fired.

This jacket is NOT DOWN. It's "down alternative." Polyester fill.

Really disappointed in most EB stuff these days. Used to like them as a decent mid range bargain brand
Hmmm… should we wonder why?
Eddie Bauer brand is now owned by JC Penny among others. JC Penny filed for bankruptcy in May 2020.
Catalyst is a joint venture formed in an all-equity transaction between JCPenney and Sparc, with shareholders Simon Property Group, Brookfield Corporation, Authentic Brands Group and Shein. Sparc and Authentic Brands bought Eddie Bauer in 2021.

I have a Eddie Bauer 550 from several years ago purchase. I really like it. Nice weight and great light super packable jacket. If the temperature drops below freezing, put this on under a good work coat and you stay almost too warm. But that had down on the sides. Not sure on this design change.

My issue with this jacket when I bought it is that the gray color is more like light purple. I don't know if this is a different run, but it was not a masculine gray color.

Avoid this in particular. I bought two of them from the last sale back when we had the PP 20%. The sides where the shell ends and the stretchy nylon begins is really thin, not sure why they made that design choice. The down itself if I had to compare, 32 degree jackets slowly lose their fill, this one in particular I see feathers every time I wear it. Overall it's not that warm but the deal breaker would be the lack of quality. I mainly bought it because I needed something very thin but looking back it wasn't too worth it. Like other reviews, it's pretty bad. I'd skip entirely if possible.
I agree with this comment. It's worth $20 - $25. Good for 45-50 degree weather. Sides will bring in the cold. Want something warmer? Spend more.

Make sure to see the spandex sides. Not sure if they were to reduce cost or fashion misfire.

No, this jacket is down. It's stated numerous times on the product page, including in the name of the product

Gone downhill in quality for anything you wear. Housewares still fine.

I picked up the 650 cirrus a few years back and am happy with it. Wore it over a hoodie and felt comfortable all day in 30 degree weather over a long sleeve shirt

This jacket is designed to help keep you warm while doing activities. It stretches with you. It works. Otherwise I don't find it very warm if not doing something very active.

Agreed... I own one as well... over a turtle neck and under my ski shell on reasonably temp days.
