This GMKtec NucBox M2 Pro S is a barebones Intel mini PC aimed at home lab, camera, and media server use. The i7 1185G7 can handle Proxmox, Home Assistant, Frigate, and multiple camera streams, and Intel iGPU support is highlighted for virtual functions and shared GPU use across virtual machines. The main caveat is that it ships with no RAM, no storage, and no Windows license, so the advertised price only covers the shell and CPU. Cooling and power limits may also affect real performance, making it feel pricey for what is included.

  • The Intel mini PC setup can handle multiple camera streams when feeds are low resolution.

  • Proxmox can run Home Assistant in a container so the system does not get fully consumed.

  • LXC containers can be lighter on resources than full virtual machines for home lab workloads.

  • A Proxmox helper script site can simplify creating multiple containers with one-line shell commands.

  • The listing framing can be misleading because barebones means no RAM, no SSD, and no Windows license.

  • The barebones unit can be considered particularly pricey compared with higher-priced models that include RAM and SSD.

  • The barebones configuration can create a cooling or TDP mismatch that changes real performance versus advertised expectations.

  • The iGPU may be poorly supported on Linux for certain workloads like video encode/decode or Ollama.

Awesome thanks for the details! I was thinking of leveraging proxmox for this.

The proxmox helper script site makes setting up alot of the containers a one line shell command. Just in case you didn't know about it.

It should easily handle home assistant however I'd recommend installing proxmox (free) and runniing home assistant os in a container so it's not taking up the whole machine. Then frigate could be in another container. It also handles vm's but lxc containers are much lighter on resources and all of them can share the gpu where you can only allocate the gpu to 1 vm and then even the lxc containers can't use it. I have docker running in a container which eliminated the one vm I was using so I can run all the apps.
Intel can run sriov and vms can all share igpu using virtual functions. It's not as straightforward as lxc but has gotten much better lately if you need or want to run multiple vms and still use igpu.

I read something about that virtual gpu software but when I looked into it, it looked like there was a fee for the software. I could be wrong since at the time it wasn't applicable to me.

  • 6 year old quad core processor WITHOUT RAM?
  • This CPU can peak in the 60W-80W range... Depending how this cooling works and how the TDP is limited, you can see vastly different performance than advertised.
  • The Front page GMK mini pc ($370) with the 7730U, 16gb RAM, and 512gb SSD is vastly superior to this barebones, even though it's processor is 4 years old...
Not a deal.
It's curious the amount of downvotes, as this is definitely not a deal, and quite clearly barebones. Not that any mini PC is currently a deal, but this one is particularly pricey.

Yeah, It seems to me that there are groups of accounts that downvote negative comments on posts from staff or other shills. The OP in this thread posts non-stop, a lot of posts are reposts of their own posts, and a lot of the things are not deals at all, but gets tons of upvotes and if you say anything bad, you get downvoted. 🤷 ♂️
