This Sabrent USB C NVMe enclosure stands out for fast, toolless SSD swaps and a sturdy aluminum body with a larger heatsink than some rivals. With the included short cable or another proper 10 gigabit per second data cable, it can reach around 1 gigabyte per second reads and writes. Firmware updates for the Realtek RTL9210 chipset are important for stability and better drive support. The main catch is cable sensitivity, since basic or charging cables can drop speeds sharply, and the second thermal pad placement is unclear.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. It needs a proper 10Gbps data cable such as USB 3.1 Gen 2, USB 3.2, or USB4; basic charging-only USB-C cables can cap performance around 300-480MB/s. With a true high-speed cable, speeds around 1GB/s are reported.

  • The included short 8-inch cable can deliver about 1GB/s and is reported to work well at full speed. If speeds are much lower, the limiting factor is likely the replacement cable rather than the enclosure.

  • Yes. Updating the RTL9210 firmware is reported to fix stability issues, improve drive support, and stop random freezes on Linux Mint. The flash tool can auto-detect variants, but the newest firmware should be selected.

  • The second thermal pad is intended to sit on top of the SSD, between the drive and the lid. One comment notes that this may make the lid harder to close, so the spare pad may be optional depending on fit.

  • Yes. The tool-free design makes it easy to swap NVMe drives quickly, which is useful for pulling drives from dead or malfunctioning laptops for data recovery and backup.

I looked and I don't think that this firmware applies to this model.
The firmware does apply. I have 2 of these units and of the older version that support SATA key'd drives, which the linked software works for. The flash tool support multiple firmware versions (A vs B) and can auto-detect the correct one to use. Just note, you should select the newest one just in case it selects an older variant.
