I used this to cover the outside of a QNAP 4-bay NAS and now you can have it in a normal room instead of in the closet...in the basement...in the neighbor's house. You can hear the drives still if you listen for them, but sooo much quieter. Only used 3 sheets to cover all 4 sides with front and back.

It will increase temp of your drives inside and will accelerate their failure.

Do not use that Peel and Seal roofing crap for this purpose. They are NOT similar. Peel and Seal is asphalt based. This is butyl rubber. And on that note, this isn't quality CLD either. Better than nothing? Of course. But if you're serious about audio/sound isolation, use something like Resonix.

This Amazon Basics sound deadening mat is a thin butyl foil sheet that works best for reducing rattles and higher frequency noise in cars, cabinets, and other metal enclosures. It can make a trunk, NAS, or metal cabinet noticeably quieter, and the 10 square feet is enough for many smaller jobs. The main tradeoffs are heavy labor to install, careful surface prep, and limited help for subwoofer vibration or permanent door installs. It is also described as less robust than premium damping products, though still useful for extra soundproofing.

  • The mat can help seal gaps and cover large trunk areas without noticeable smell in the trunk over time.

    dubmangdubmang

  • The mat can noticeably reduce exhaust drone when applied to a trunk floor and spare tire area.

    dubmang

  • The mat can make a metal cabinet sound much nicer and quieter by preventing the shell from acting as a noise maker.

    cloudyview

  • The mat can reduce audible drive clicking when drive heads are properly treated during installation.

    nem

  • The mat can be too thin and not thick enough for serious audio isolation compared with higher quality CLD options.

    firebirdudePurpleScene795

  • The mat can be labor-intensive to install because surface prep can be as hard as the installation itself.

    megablankMarlin1975

  • The mat is not effective for low-frequency vibration or subwoofer isolation and works better for high-frequency noise.

    iamavenjsmitty5000

  • The mat can increase drive temperature when used inside a drive enclosure, which may accelerate failure.

what's the deal here ?
It more expensive per sqft vs buying either 36sqft packs but 10sqft is enough for many use cases so it is a nice price for the smaller amount.

AI says I need 50 square feet to cover the wheel wells of a Pacifica minivan. Maybe there are larger sheets that would be more economical? FYI there is 10 square feet in this, and thickness is said to be 2mm. Seems quite thin, but the reviews are good.

I used a pack of these on an IKEA Trotten (metal storage cabinet) and it makes it sounds so much nicer/quieter. It's also the stand for my 3D printers, so it not being an empty metal shell is a HUGE benefit. It would be a massive noise maker without the pads.
(Nothing special about these specific pads, other than getting a small pack fit relatively cheap per ft)
