Actually I have something similar and it works very well. Got me a 2tb ssd and all the ports to run three screens, 2 printers (BW laser & Color), 2 labelers, and still a bunch of open ports for data transfer and other devices. All the upgrades i need on my Mac mini m4 without the premium Mac prices.

tempted to just use this as a tb4 hub

having a fan might seem useful to keep the circuit board cool

I don't see how adding another heat source below the Mac without active cooling will be good in any way. These drives can get hot!

It just shows up as an external 2tb drive in finder?

You'll need to format the drive when you first plug it in, but yes, it shows up as 2tb drive for me.

Reviews state this creates a hazard of the m4 falling off the top of the dock. Also dock uses single USB connection so keep that in mind as you won't be charging too many devices via this dock with power only coming from a single USB connection.
