Never owned an ospreys... so the 70l, if I detach the outside daypack (15l) it becomes a 55 liter backpack (less bulky) ?

I would think the 55L for sale without be just that without the daypack included but doesn't seem the case, so is it better to get the 55L or 70L in your opinion?

55 liter straight can carry on while 70L can detach... dilemma right now.. only a few bucks more but is it more practical? Pls help

The 40L is the perfect size for airport travel maybe even getting too big.

The 55L is quite large. The 70L is fine if you like the look of both pieces matching but you can always use a different 15L backpack.

The Osprey farpoint generally is great for carrying a lot of weight as it's very adjustable and cushioned really well with back vents and thick hip pads.

That being said for clothes and light weight things you can easily go with a lighter and less rugged backpack.

I think this backpack is more useful for those backpacking through Europe and want to carry everything with them all the time or if you plan to do lot of airport walking.

55l comes with a daypack. 40l doesn't

I thought the 55L and the 70L were desribed as "Included Farpoint™/Fairview™ Travel Daypack provides 15 L of additional storage" so 55+15 and 70+15 and 40 does not include the daypack.

I have an older version of the 40L which I got at an REI garage sale back in the day and I love it. The 40 is the perfect carry on size the 70 would be good for checking in but the point of these farpoints is for carrying it like a backpack. Always, just want to say this is a good Osprey line.

I did a 45L one-ish bag travel in Asia for four months last year, including snowy winter in Japan and China, meaning I brought thick winter clothes. I also brought an osprey daylite plus with a 15" laptop, a 11" tablet, a large PD tech pouch inside, a sling bag with one mirrorless camera and 2 lenses inside, all packed into that 45L onebag. Yet, I still felt 45L was way toooooooooooooooooo big. If packing light, I totally agree that even 40L is more than enough. The limit for 40-ish liter bag is always the weight, not the capacity.

yes, and also the caveat on anything larger than the 40L is that there is no side-zippered laptop pocket because they assume you will be stashing your laptop/tablet in the attached daypack. The 40L has the convenient suspended laptop pocket along the back.

The 40L really is the sweet spot. I recently stress-tested my 40L (from BF 2025 @ $92) before my trip and was able to get roughly 2 weeks worth of clothes in there using packing cubes + interior compression straps and still had room left over.
Even with a 14" laptop and tablet in there it didn't feel like too much carry on one's back.

I have an older 55 l with a daypack and we've definitely been able to carry it on as an overhead luggage when traveling internationally. It may be harder in this day and age post covid, but if you don't stuff it all the way full, we've consistently had it on the overhead bins

for their 40L... any current owner can advise, the 'quick access laptop sleeve'.

Hows the padding for the side of the sleeve which makes contact to your back?

Because from what I recall, the first year they revised their pack to where the laptop was held (to your back) the padding wasn't stiff or anything close to being preventative to to potentially cracking from flexing if your pack is max stuffed and the curvature of your shoulders and back to the laptop.

But stiff backing adds weight.

the 40L along with a strapped on daypack is amazing. I've gone to asia, Europe, Africa. it's thoughtfully sized for international carryon (weight was more of an issue in Asia and Africa). the solid frame and strap design make if very comfortable for 5-10mi a day of walking fully loaded. highly recommend

Just want to clarify, the 55L is just the 40L bag and a detachable 15L bag. There are some minor differences between the 40L and the 55L's main bag but they are pretty minor, like not having a laptop compartment or external pocket, which won't hinder you much considering you'll have the daypack.If you think you're NEVER going to use a daypack with it, get a 40L. Otherwise, get a 55L.

Also, these are truly amazing backpacks and the lifetime warranty is awesome, as it covers almost all functional damage, and they often honor it even if it's accidental.

This is not the latest version of these bags. You can see the differences if you look at Osprey's site. In the 40L for example the laptop comparment is accesed differently. The new ones are a bit lighter as well.
