This 12 gauge Amazon Basics speaker wire is a stranded, pure copper option that fits long runs and power hungry home theater setups. It has been used successfully for surround, surround back, Atmos, and even 4 ohm speakers, and the 99.9 percent oxygen free copper is treated as close to as pure as practical. The main caution is that the conductor may not feel like a full true 12 gauge, and the wire does not look especially flexible. For shorter runs or lower power speakers, cheaper 16 gauge is often enough, so this makes the most sense when gauge really matters.

Common Questions (5)

  • Yes. The wire is stranded copper, and it is described as pure copper rather than copper-clad aluminum. That makes it a better choice for speaker runs where low resistance matters.

  • For runs around 100 feet or more, 12-gauge is the safer pick, especially for power-hungry speakers. For shorter runs under about 50 feet with 8-ohm speakers and under roughly 120 watts, 16-gauge is often sufficient.

  • It has been used successfully for surround, surround back, and Atmos channels, including amplified 4-ohm speakers. It is also suitable for in-ceiling Atmos runs and other home theater speaker wiring.

  • The outer jacket can make it look like full 12-gauge, but one comparison found less copper inside than older true 12-gauge wire. A practical check is to measure the conductor diameter, which should be about 2.0 mm for 12-gauge stranded wire.

  • It may not be very flexible based on review videos, so it may be less convenient for tight bends or tricky routing. The tradeoff is that it is still a decent price for 12-gauge copper wire.

Stranded copper. I recently ran the 14ga for my rears and it works fine, seems like good stuff. I paid $38 for 200'.

Good deal for those who are running insanely power-hungry speakers or looking at massive lengths (100ft+) for most people (8ohm speakers, less than ~120w, less than ~50ft runs) the really cheap Amazon basics 16gauge (about $10 for 100' currently) is likely sufficient. Again this is a good deal, but notice the gauge.

I purchased this very item two months ago to add in-ceiling Atmos speakers... and promptly returned it after comparing it to actual 12-gauge copper speaker wire I purchased by the foot at Lowe's (or was it Home Depot?) 20+ years ago when I first purchased my house and set up the media room with 7.1 in the walls. This Amazon Basic has the outer plastic insulation that makes the diameter look like 12-gauge, but inside it only looks to have about 1/3 to 1/2 of the amount of copper in it compared to my existing 12-gauge.

Pure copper is what You want, this is it, You combine this with banana plugs and your all set, even if it is not true 12 gauge, still better than copper clad aluminum any day.

"Even if it is not true 12 gauge"?....I'm not passing judgment on this, since I haven't used it, but if it's not really 12 gauge wire, then it's being falsely misrepresented, and that's completely unacceptable under any circumstances!....regardless of it being better than copper clad aluminum (which is crap).

Your evaluation doesn't seem very scientific, but you may be right. I have a difficult time trusting any "Amazon Basics" product!

I have used less than 12 Ga in a few installs, to be honest I did not notice any difference, now that being said, if it was a long run, (say 100' or more), I would really look for and use 12 gauge or even better. I really don't think any problems would arise from 13 or even 14 gauge of pure copper at less than 100'.

Do you mean 100% versus 99.9%? Good luck finding 100%, and even if you did, it would make absolutely no difference.

12 gauge stranded wire should have a conductor diameter of 2.0mm. If you could measure your wire and post the results, that would be helpful to others.

I could almost imagine the diff between 99.9% and 100%, 99.9% is about as pure as You will find and would guess that it would vary between 95% and 99%, imo
