This 40 inch MSI ultrawide stands out as a productivity first gaming monitor, with strong value, 155Hz smoothness, crisp enough text for coding, and plenty of room for side by side windows or spreadsheets. The IPS panel gets praise for color and viewing angles, and the included DisplayPort cable and KVM add convenience. The main drawbacks are the flat shape at this size, which can feel awkward up close, plus reports of pixel visibility, weak HDR, and no HDMI 2.1. A solid fit if you want width more than cinematic sharpness.

  • The flat 40-inch ultrawide can feel uncomfortable when sitting close, causing nausea-like projection effects.

  • The monitor lacks HDMI 2.1 support, which can limit full-speed performance when using HDMI.

  • The resolution can look pixelated on a 40-inch ultrawide, and some users report seeing individual pixels.

  • Wake-up behavior can be slow after laptop plug-in, and USB-C charging can stop when the monitor sleeps.

Guys, before you freak out, the pixel density is really not that bad.

Many of you have probably heard that a 32" 1440p monitor has the exact same pixel density as a 24" monitor at 1080p. They are basically the same.

Do the math:

24" 1920 x 1080 = 2203 diagonal pixels (you can figure this out with the very simple A^2 + B^2 = C^2 Pythagorean theorem).

2203 / 24 = 91.8 PPI

32" 2560 x 1440 = 2937 diagonal

2937 / 32 = 91.8 PPI

Well, now we have a 40" monitor at 1440p. That has to be terrible pixel density, right? WRONG. This is not a standard 1440p monitor at 2560W. It's wide at 3440.

Let's do the math

40" 3440 x 1440 = 3729 diagonal

3729 / 40 = 93.2 PPI -- barely, but still better Pixel Density.

Also, and I bet this is going to surprise some of you, but a 4k standard size monitor at 40" is only about 19% better pixel density. Still good, but worth the extra $500?

Again, let's do the math.

40" 3840 × 2160 = 4405 diagonal

4405 / 40 = 110.1 PPI

Literally just 17 PPI > than the 93 PPI of this monitor, roughly an increase of 19% pixel density.

So, if you don't mind not having ultra sharp 1440p 27" quality, or 4k sharpness, then this is actually pretty darn good. This is some serious bang for your buck.
Bro straight up did the math

On the Amazon reviews, someone gave a 1 star review saying "there's a bunch of dead pixels in the center of the screen in the shape of a crosshair".... That's a feature of the monitor that can be toggled off and on 😂😂😂🤣

It's not 4k, so the hdmi speeds don't really matter I guess.
It does if this is also a monitor for a console. It'll be 1080P 120hz or 1440P 60hz only.

Close. If 4k, 2.0 can only do 60hz. If hdmi 2.1 4k can do 120hz. So again unless you're gaming in 4k it doesn't matter. But if you are it does.

This is not an ideal monitor for a console, unless you don't mind stretching the picture or playing with black bars.

A displayport cable is included. Except for rare circumstances, there isn't much reason to use hdmi with this.

I've used one of these as a daily driver for over a year. My only complaint is it has PWM, so it might be a bit more tiring on the eyes. For coding, I use it for two projects side by side, without issue. Text is crisp enough, colors are decent, IPS so that helps. I also use it for gaming driven by a 7900 GRE. Great for that. I also use it as my bedroom TV. Great for that. The KVM works great when I plug in a work laptop.

Anyone tried to make this 4k ultrawide? For 21:9 that would be 5040x2160...

With nvidia gpu, I can make custom resolution and seem to be able to turn a 4k display into 8k.

My main monitor has problems so I had another monitor 4k 60hz 10bit for video watching only and was able to make it into 4k 144hz 8bit or 120hz 10bit...cannot seem to do 8k on this cheap backup one tho but seems to work well since I can tell the difference between 60hz and 120-144hz in games.

I literally just returned it. I was trying to replace the 49" OLED that I got from Sam's Club for 750, and figured this is almost a third of the price.

The biggest problem with it is that it isn't curved - so it almost appears like it's projecting out towards you, like an old CRT TV, and the center looks wider than the ends. It isn't actually that way, but sitting as close as you would to a monitor, and it being as wide as it is, is almost nauseating.

Very disappointing, but stuck with the Sam's Club 49". Wish it'd go on sale.
My rule of thumb is anything ultrawide bigger than 34" has to be curved. Personal preference of course. I tend to lean to something close to 1000R

I concur with this assessment. The middle seemed closer and the ends looked weird. Would have been perfect if this was curved. Going back to Costco for me.
