These are awesome! If you're not aware, this (and other Cento products) has a "Find My Field" code on each can that you can use to lookup the actual farm that those tomatoes were grown in (in Italy)! It's very cool, and zooms in like google earth satellite image. https://www.cento.com/brands/cent...-field.php

Yeah, as long as a can isn't leaking or the ends aren't puffed out a dent doesn't hurt anything.

Cento Certified San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes are prized for pizza sauce, pasta sauce, and simple Neapolitan style pies, with a fresh flavor that stands out enough to replace more complicated sauces. The cans also include a Find My Field code that traces the farm in Italy, adding a nice provenance touch. The main drawback is shipping damage, since dented cans show up often enough that inspection on arrival matters. Minor dents are usually treated as cosmetic if the can is intact, but seam or edge dents raise safety concerns.

Common Questions (5)

  • Dented cans are common with this Amazon shipment, and some orders have arrived with multiple unusable cans. It's smart to open the case right away and inspect everything so you can request a refund or replacement if needed.

  • A dent alone usually does not hurt the contents if the can is not leaking and the ends are not puffed out. Dents on seams or edges are the bigger concern because they can create air leaks, so those are the ones to discard.

  • The deal has been bought for as low as $11.76 in October, and another shopper found the same 6-pack elsewhere showing $27. Some buyers also note that part of the cost is shipping tomatoes from Italy, so the value depends on whether you want imported San Marzano tomatoes specifically.

  • They're especially popular for pizza sauce and pasta sauce. A simple Neapolitan-style approach is to hand-crush them, remove the heavy skin and ends, then add salt, pepper, and basil.

  • Yes. Each can includes a Find My Field code that can be used to look up the actual farm in Italy, with an interactive map-style zoom view. Some 2025 codes starting with G are still integrating, but older codes have worked successfully.

Yeah check it out! Per the notice on the link I provided, certain codes from 2025 starting with G are still integrating into the Find My Field. That said, I used it successfully several years ago so it'll likely work for most products.

Oh good point, I missed that deal. Great score! Weird that that post on SD (https://slickdeals.net/f/18711109-6-pack-28oz-cento-certified-san-marzano-whole-peeled-plum-tomatoes-11-20-w-subscribe-save?src=SDSearchv3&attrsrc=Thread%3AExpired%3ATrue%7CSearch%3AType%3Anormal%7CSearch%3ASort%3Arelevance%7CSearch%3AHideExpired%3Afalse) goes to the exact same tomatoes and 6 pack, but a different product page/pics than OP, and showing $27 now.

You will most likely get dented cans. Tried twice with Amazon...both times had multiple dented cans to the point many were unusable.

Good reminder to open the case and inspect. I forget to do so as well. When I have gotten damaged goods Amazon CS is quick to do a return-less refund thru chat. YMMV obv.

How are dented cans making the contents inside unusable?

because dents on the seams and or edges can introduce unseen air leaks which can lead to botulism. I used the cans with minor dents on the sides and am still alive, but felt it was safest to toss ones with MAJOR dents on seems/edges (just wasnt worth the risk to family).
