Anyone know what's the range of these things? Thinking of getting it for the in laws who lives in the desert about 90 miles from Los Angeles.

I've had the best luck getting consistent reception with the Phillips ones. Used this one before and it was good, but currently using the long flat one on top of my TV, more low profile

Very short range! You will need an outside antenna for any really distance.

The new signals are very directional. For example, I can get about 104 channels in the San Jose/SFO bay area. but I have my antenna high up and on a rotor so I can face either San Francisco or San Jose depending on where it is being broadcast from. I have found better reception using some of the older format antenna vs the bowtie style antenna. But I am currently using the bowtie format as it is much smaller and mounted it up off of a chimney. I used to have a standard long-range antenna on top of a two story house and a 20 foot mast and got excellent reception. I had to take it down for termite tenting and a new roof and never put it up again - hence the bowtie style now. I live next to some hills and there are times where the bowtie style had a hard time brining in PBS from San Francisco. The higher antenna had no problem.

I think the large antenna can go maybe 130 or 140 miles when place high. You need to look at your terrain. I also purchased a signal booster that can help significantly.

My brother gave me one of these last year and I decided to try and see if I could watch the NFL playoffs over the air instead of scramble for a streaming service. Let me tell you I was very surprised how perfect everything turned out! FOX games were 720, and all the others were in 1080 quality. I am 30 or so miles from los angeles. I bought a couple more...this is a great price.

People make fun of these things, but if you're within 20 miles or so of the transmitters, they work better than all these "Super-NEXGEN-8K-600mi-UltraHD-Turbo-Streamer3000" antenna that look like sex toys. A set of adjustable rabbit ears for VHF and a loop for UHF and you're golden.
I'm 33 miles from the transmitters in my area, and I have this exact antenna plugged into my TiVo along with an el cheapo antenna amplifier. I pretty much have a clear line of sight to the transmitter antennae, so that definitely helps. I wish the rabbit ears were a little longer, but otherwise it works well.
The antenna you get doesn't make a difference at all in whether the picture is 720 or 1080. That's up to the transmitter. Beyond 30 miles or so, you should probably be looking at a more directional antenna and mount it outside. Antennaweb.org is a great resource for telling you where the transmission towers are as well as suggestions for antenna type.
